GR, Bistum Chur. Zu Beginn des 9. Jh. monasterium Tuberis (Tuberis nach der gleichnamigen Landschaft, später ging die Bezeichnung auf… das benachbarte Dorf Taufers über), 1157 Monasterium, ca. 1170 ecclesia sancti Iohannis Baptiste in Monasterio. Die nach westfränk. Modell im letzten Viertel des 8. Jh. erbaute monumentale Klosteranlage ist eine Stiftung Karls d.Gr. oder eine karolingisch beeinflusste churbischöfl. Gründung in der religiösen Bewegung, die im 8. Jh. auch zur Entstehung der kleineren rät. Klöster Cazis, Mistail, Pfäfers und Disentis führte. Das auch als passpolit. Stützpunkt des Reiches zwischen Italien und Bayern und als bischöfl. Residenz errichtete Kloster wurde 881 durch Tausch Eigenkloster des Bf. von Chur. Die Verbrüderungsbücher lassen auf einen Abstieg des vormals blühenden karoling. Klosters Ende des 9. Jh. schliessen. Im 12. Jh. zogen Benediktinerinnen in das Gebäude ein. Als Frauenkloster erscheint M. erstmals 1163 nach der Reform durch Bf. Adelgott. Die ökonom. Grundlage bildeten v.a. Schenkungen der Tarasper, der Bf. von Chur und der Gf. von Tirol im Val M. und im Vinschgau, im mittleren Etschtal und im Unterengadin, in Nauders und im Ötztal. Ein Propst verwaltete die Güter. In der karoling. Saalkirche mit ehemals fünf Apsiden sind bedeutende Fresken des europ. FrühMA erhalten (zentrale christl. Themen und Szenen aus dem Leben Davids, entstanden um 800). Die Apsiden und die Ostwand wurden am Ende des 12. Jh. mit rom. Fresken übermalt (Gastmahl des Herodes, kluge und törichte Jungfrauen, Apostel, St. Stephanus), was für eine spirituelle und wirtschaftl. Blütezeit des Klosters spricht. Bereits ins 11. Jh. fällt der Neubau der bischöfl. Residenz (bischöfl. Wohnturm, Kreuzgang, Doppelkapelle St. Ulrich und St. Niklaus). Im 14. und 15. Jh. war die Mystik im Kloster M. von zentraler Bedeutung, wie die Verehrung einer Heiligbluthostie und das vor 1300 eingeführte Fronleichnamsfest zeigen. Mehrere Codices bezeugen die Pflege der Liturgie, des Chorgebets und der individuellen Spiritualität, z.B. ein Hymnar aus dem 14. Jh. und ein Andachtsbuch aus dem 15. Jh., dessen Autor Kritik an der äusserl. Frömmigkeit übte. Um 1500 wurde die karoling. Klosterkirche zu einer dreischiffigen spätgot. Hallenkirche umgestaltet. Ausserdem erfolgte die Neueinrichtung des aus dem 10. Jh. stammenden Plantaturms und der Bau des Kirchturms. Die Ilanzer Artikel von 1524 und 1526 gefährdeten die ökonom. Grundlage und den Bestand des Konvents. Im Geiste des Konzils von Trient (1545-63) förderten die Bischöfe in Konstitutionen von 1600 und 1614 das religiöse Leben, z.B. den Sakramentenempfang und das Brevier. Im Gegenzug stellten sie zum Teil spätma. Zustände wieder her, obwohl im 16. Jh. manche Regeln - wie das Verbot des Saittenspils oder das Gebot eines gemeinsamen Schlafsaals - gelockert worden waren. Die Klostervogtei, die den Schutz und die Aufsicht über die Verwaltung und die Äbtissinnenwahl umfasste, war ein Lehen des Bischofs. Die Vogteirechte fielen um etwa 1211 von den Taraspern an die Matscher und 1421 unrechtmässig als erbl. Lehen an Österreich, 1803 wurden sie von der Bündner Regierung übernommen. Die polit. und konfessionelle Randlage und die zwischen Bischof, Bünden und Habsburg umstrittenen Rechte beeinträchtigten während Jahrhunderten das Eigenleben des Klosters. Dabei ging es vielfach um die Wahl und Bestätigung der Äbtissin und die Besetzung des Vogts, des Spirituals und des Propstes. Die Vogtei wurde 1956 aufgehoben und die Aufsicht über das Kloster dem Corpus catholicum übertragen. Die Klosteranlage wird seit 1947 systematisch restauriert und kunsthistorisch und archäologisch erforscht. Seit 1969 steht sie unter Denkmalschutz, seit 1983 gehört sie zum Weltkulturgut der Unesco.
