Condizione: Good. First Edition. Elephantine Folio. 53 by 35 cm. Half-title, title, 66 pp. (pagination counts title and blank verso but not half-title leaf), followed by seven hand-colored plates. Almost half of the text is written in very large elegant type. All the text pages have intricate decorative borders employing checkering, snowflake-like highlight pieces in the corners, and lace-like tracery. The large color plates are enriched with gum arabic. They also emphasize the theatricality of the event, with a great deal of attention given to the audience and the vast sweep of the boxes akin to that of the grandest opera house. The event was both a sporting and theatrical event, and as to the latter, there was elaborate ritual and protocol, not to mention outfitting, that was as if not more the point than the competition. The paper pastedown of the binding has considerable wear and plenty of soiling, with a few blotches of chipping, a lifting of part of the spine surface, etc. Still a plus to have this, and for the most part, intact. Scattered foxing, but mostly light. On last text page, page 66, the foxing is heavy. Color plates have moderate age toning but are mostly free of blight. Hardcover. Stampa litografica originale. Il disegno spetta a Enrico Gonin, abile artista piemontese noto per le sue suites litografiche di soggetto vedutistico. Enrico è fratello del noto pittore Francesco Gonin che in questa suite disegnò le figure, come si evince dalle note tipografiche. La trasposizione su lastra tipografica è opera di Demetrio Festa, artista torinese figlio di Felice Benedetto, fondatore della prima litografia torinese. Interno dell`antico manicomio di Torino. La decisione di costruire l`edificio del Regio Manicomio , venne presa da un lato per l`inadeguatezza dell`Ospedale dei Pazzerelli (la precedente struttura manicomiale, situata in un edificio tra le attuali via Piave e via san Domenico), dall`altro per lo svilupparsi di una nuova attenzione medica, sociale e politica nei confronti della questione del controllo dei comportamenti devianti. L`edificio, costruito dal 1828 al 1835, è stato progettato dall`architetto Giuseppe Talucchi (1782-1863), il nucleo centrale, destinato a spazi di servizio, divideva due padiglioni simmetrici corrispondenti alla divisione per sesso dei ricoverati. La dislocazione delle stanze rendeva possibile la separazione per tipo di disturbo e tra ospiti paganti e non e locali destinati al lavoro . Rispetto all`edificio originario, attualmente non esiste più l`imponente muro di recinzione ed è stata aggiunta, a metà Ottocento, la struttura semicircolare del lato sud, su progetto dell`architetto Barnaba Panizza (1806-1895).Esemplare in buone condizioni conservative.
