All are in original coloured pictorial wrappers, profusely illustrated throughout in black and white with some colour photographic illustrations, usually 40pp. Number 12 features a fold out pictorial plate.…Text in English, except for Language Corner, 30.5 x 23cm. Some occasional wear to wrapper spines and slight soiling at opening edges. One leaf from Number 8, pp 31/32 is missing. Spine of Number 10 has washi paper minor repair, otherwise in very good condition. This influential magazine was established by Soong Ching-ling in 1949. Published in 6 languages including Arabic and Chinese the purpose was to present a very positive view of Chinese life and culture to the outside world. Four Nianhua posters, at least one dating from the Great Leap Forward. In this example, a sister braids her hair whilst minding her crawling toddler brother "Sweet Heart". On the wall a poster depicts the industrialisation of agriculture "Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy and grain is the foundation" [caption]. Two others feature traditional narrative tales, and one other features a pair of chubby toddlers holding a tray of peaches and flowers, symbols of longevity and abundance.

On the wall a poster proclaiming the industrialisation of agriculture "Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy and grain is the foundation" [caption]; in another, five toddlers dance in a circle their flags and lanterns captioned "The Great Leap Forward" and "Long Live Mao". Ephemeral examples of folk art and the use to which it was put for political purpose.

The lively illustrations show the capitalist nations being swept aside by a triumphant forklift driver, a diligent worker studying after hours, and Father Christmas prepa…ring for December 1959 while China celebrates already having surpassed targets for 1960. During the 1950s and 1960s, industrial and commercial organizations in China often privately printed their own publications to demonstrate their ideological fealty. During the Great Leap Forward - a nationwide push to astronomically increase industrial and agricultural output - these demonstrations were especially opportune. This example, issued by Shanghai's main electrical cables factory, was inevitably issued in small numbers and is unrecorded institutionally. Octavo. Colour frontispiece, 9 similar plates, illustrations in text; text in Chinese. Original illustrated wrappers, gatherings sewn and glued into wrappers as issued, spine lettered in red, front cover lettered in brown and green, red and green vignette of worker and factory. Wrappers rubbed and creased, patch of skinning on rear cover, illustrations and contents clean with expected toning to text: very good.
