Movsès Khorénatsi, dans son "Histoire d'Arménie", raconte qu'à l'époque du roi Abgar (début du Ier siècle de notre ère) Hérode, venu en Arménie, réclama que ses portraits .fussent placés à côté de ceux des rois dans les templpes paiens arméniens. On peut en déduire qu'à cette époque on exécutait déjà les portraits des rois qu'on plaçait dans les temples. Sur les murs des églises arméniennes on représentait outre les saints, les portraits des catholicos. C'est Hovannes Dras-khanakertsi qui mentionne cette coutume. Il rapporte les paroles suivantes du catholicos Solomon Garnétsi: "Je me mets en route pour aller me faire dessiner par d'habiles artistes, avec d'autres patriarches, sur le mur de l'église.
