Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. 1st Edition. A major collection of primary texts documenting the celebrated astronomical controversy prompted by the appearance of three comets in 1618. Translated by distinguished Galileo scholar Stillman Drake and medical historian C. D. O'Malley, the volume gat…hers writings by Galileo Galilei, Jesuit astronomer Horatio Grassi, Mario Guiducci, and Johannes Kepler. The contents include Grassi's On the Three Comets of the Year 1618 and The Astronomical Balance; Guiducci's Discourse on the Comets and Letter to Tarquinio Galluzzi; Galileo's influential The Assayer; and Kepler's appendix to the Hyperaspistes. The collection presents the competing astronomical, optical, and philosophical arguments that shaped one of the defining scientific disputes of the early seventeenth century. Condition: Very Good hardcover in a Fair original dust jacket. Original burgundy cloth binding remains square and firm, with bright gilt spine lettering and decoration. Boards show only mild shelf wear. Text-block edges have light dusting and age toning. Interior pages appear clean and securely bound, with no ownership inscriptions, underlining, or annotations observed in the photographed portions. The dust jacket is complete enough to retain all principal text and artwork but is heavily worn. It shows overall toning and soiling, rubbing, creasing, edge tears and chips, and substantial loss at the head of the spine panel. The spine panel also has a conspicuous brown moisture stain, with additional wear at the folds and lower edge. The jacket remains present and serviceable but should be graded Fair without hesitation—this one has survived the comet strike, but only just. This is the first English edition and the first publication bringing these related works together as a unified collection. It is an important scholarly source for the history of astronomy and the Scientific Revolution, particularly for the development of Galileo's scientific method and his disputes with Jesuit intellectuals. The volume includes bibliographical notes and numerous period astronomical diagrams. Ships carefully packed in protective materials. USPS Media Mail is the standard domestic shipping method unless another service is requested. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' 30-day return policy. SCI 2a.
