Nach Arbeiten zur Geschichte der Geographie (Geschichte des Zeitalters der Entdeckungen, 1858, (2)1877, Nachdr. 1930; Geschichte der Erdkunde, 1865, (2)1877, Nachdr. 1961) wandte sich Peschel vor allem der physischen Geographie zu (Neue Probleme der vergleichenden Erdkunde als Versuch einer Morphologie der Erdoberfläche, 1870, (4)1883; Physische Erdkunde, 2 Bde., 1879-81, (2)1883-85).
