V., etw. leimschattig, leichte papierbedingte Oxidation, leichte Gbrsp. - Peschel, (1826 - 1875), machte eine Kaufmannslehre, holte 1845 das Abitur nach und begann im selben Jahr das Studium der Rechtswissenschaft in Heidelberg und Leipzig. 1848 in Jena in absentia promoviert, schrieb er als Korrespondent, später als Redakteur der "Augsburger Allgemeinen Zeitung" Berichte über das Zeitgeschehen, bis er 1854 die Leitung der landes- und völkerkundlichen Wochenzeitschrift "Ausland" übernahm. 1871 wurde er o.Prof. der Geographie in Leipzig. Nach Arbeiten zur Geschichte der Geographie (Geschichte des Zeitalters der Entdeckungen, 1858, (2)1877, Nachdr. 1930; Geschichte der Erdkunde, 1865, (2)1877, Nachdr. 1961) wandte sich Peschel vor allem der physischen Geographie zu (Neue Probleme der vergleichenden Erdkunde als Versuch einer Morphologie der Erdoberfläche, 1870, (4)1883; Physische Erdkunde, 2 Bde., 1879-81, (2)1883-85). Zu seinen weiteren Werken gehört u.a. Völkerkunde (1874, (7)1897). (DBE).
