Die bizarren Ameisenlöwen gelten seit der Antike als mystische Dämonen des Staubs. Die 2 bis 30 mm messenden Insektenlarven erbeuten verschiedene Gliedertiere, die sie mit injizierten Giften - erzeugt von Bakterien - lähmen. Einige Gattungen dieser "Miniaturungeheuer" bauen Sandtrichter, die als Rutschfallen insbesondere zum Fangen von Ameisen dienen. Diese stationäre Jagdmethode setzt voraus, dass die Jäger sich gedulden müssen, bis Beute naht. Dementsprechend ist eine Monate währende Hungerfähigkeit Teil einer extremen Überlebensstrategie. Als Bewohner lebensfeindlicher Sanddünen, Felsmulden und sonnenexponierter Detritus-Schichten sind Ameisenlöwen an Trockenheit und Körpertemperaturen bis 52 °C angepasst. Sie sind die kleinen sechsfüßigen "Löwen" der Trockenzonen der Erde. In der Kalahari übertrifft deren Biomasse jene räuberischer Wirbeltiere. Ameisenjungfern sind grazile libellenähnliche Fluginsekten, die sich in vollkommener Verwandlung aus den Ameisenlöwen entwickeln. Aus den kompakten Sandlarven werden 3 bis 17 cm spannende Netzflügler mit großen Facettenaugen und vier mehr oder weniger gefleckten Flügeln. Von den rund 2000 auf der Erde zu erwartenden Arten, die vor allem die trocken-heißen Zonen besiedeln, dringen immerhin noch 19 bis Mitteleuropa, drei davon sogar bis Skandinavien vor. Contains 87 unnumbered color chromolithographic plates depicting the folk costumes of the Croatian Littoral, Dalmatia, the Dalmatian Hinterland, the Bay of Kotor, and Montenegro. Each illustration is accompanied by text. The chromolithographs were created based on paintings by Franz Bohumil Doubek, Paul Janowitz, Emil Lauffer, Peter Maixner, and Guido Manes, which were in turn based on the author's watercolors and photographs by Antonio Vives. A list of illustrations (plates) appears at the beginning of the book, following the preface. Like most of the author's works, this one was published anonymously. In 1870, the author began publishing the series *Die Serben an der Adria. Ihre Typen und Trachten* (The Serbs on the Adriatic: Their Types and Costumes), which, according to the original subscription prospectus, was intended to comprise 100 plates and accompanying text. The author was not named; only the artists commissioned to create the paintings under his supervision?Emil Lauffer, Guido Manes, and Petr Maixner?were listed. By 1878, nine fascicles containing a total of 45 plates (without accompanying text) had been published, after which printing ceased. After leaving Tuscany due to political circumstances, his family settled in Bohemia in 1859. He studied philosophy, law, natural sciences, and art in Prague. As was customary for members of the ruling dynasty, he received private tutoring. The harsher climate of Bohemia did not suit his health, so he would often spend several months in Venice to stabilize his condition. As early as age 14, during his first stay in Venice, he began recording his travel impressions. During his time in Venice, he undertook his first trips to Trieste and Istria. His travels grew increasingly extensive, taking him as far as Heligoland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and England, as well as Spain, Gibraltar, and Tunisia. He dedicated his life to scientific research in the Mediterranean, sailing the region for decades aboard his steam yachts *Nixe I* and *Nixe II*, usually accompanied by an entourage of about twenty people. He published more than fifty works. Kommentierter Katalog der Neuropterida (Insecta: Raphidioptera, Megaloptera, Neuroptera) der Westpaläarktis deals with the Neuropterida of the Western Palaearctic and lists and comments on all species and subspecies, genera and subgenera, families, subfamilies and tribes recorded from this region as well as on the suborders, the three orders and the superorder. The Westem Palaearctic is defined here as the area that covers Europe, the Atlantic Islands, northem Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Middle Asia. The countries within this region are included on the basis of their present political borders, even if parts of them fall within another biogeographic region; in particular this concems the south of Egypt and the southern parts of the Arabian Peninsula which belong to the Afrotropical region. The Neuropterida of the following countries are considered: all European countries, the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands; AFRICA: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt (excluding Sinai); ASIA: Armenia, Grusinia, Azerbaidjan, Anatolia, Cyprus, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt (Sinai), Syria, Jordan, Saudi-Arabia, Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran. Lists of synonomies are provided for each taxon; those for taxa of the species group as well as of the genus group contain all names ever introduced and being regarded as synonyms now regardless the geographic provenance. Comments are provided on the systematisation of taxa in the family group and for the orders, suborders and the superorder and on the taxonomic status for taxa of the species group and of the genus group respectively. The distribution is outlined (in species and subspecies by listing all countries from which records are available) and a biogeographic characterisation is attempted whenever possible. Altogether 802 species (plus 30 subspecies) are documented, the validity of which has either been corroborated or can not be excluded.
