Diesen evolutiven Erfolg verdanken sie unter anderem ihrem äußerst widerstandsfähigen, chitinhaltigen Außenskelett sowie einer oftmals extremen Fortpflanzungsleistung, die einige Tropeninsekten zu enormen Massenvermehrungen befähigt, wenn man etwa an Wanderheuschrecken denkt. Bemerkenswert ist die Staatenbildung mancher tropischer Insekten wie Termiten und Blattschneiderameisen, die durch die Ausbildung von Kasten als Voraussetzung für eine Arbeitsteilung zwischen unterschiedlich entwickelten Individuen einer Art ermöglicht wird. Höchst beeindruckend sind auch die vielfältigen Symbiosen von tropischen Insekten mit anderen Organismen zum gegenseitigen Nutzen der beteiligten Partner, so etwa die Pilzzuchten von Termiten und Blattschneiderameisen oder das Vorkommen von Mikroorganismen im Insektendarm zum Aufschluss von Zellulose. Der Autor hat die Insektenfotografie als Hobby über fünf Jahrzehnte hinweg betrieben, vor allem in den Tropen. Über 240 seiner Fotos, vor allem Nahaufnahmen von Kerbtieren aus den verschiedensten Insektenordnungen und 30 tropischen Ländern, wurden in dem vorliegenden Bildband erstmalig zusammengestellt. Trotz ihrer Anpassungen sind heute viele der abgebildeten Arten durch die Einwirkung des Menschen stark gefährdet. Es sollte alles nur Mögliche unternommen werden, damit sich diese Situation nicht weiter verschlechtert und die bizarr geformten oder prachtvoll gefärbten Tropeninsekten für die Nachwelt erhalten bleiben. 267 pp., 240 color photos, br. 8.

Der Besitz von Hautdrüsen, die Wachs, Lack und andere Sekrete liefern, ermöglicht es den Schildläusen, ihre pflanzliche Nahrung in Substanzen umzuwandeln, die ihnen wirksamen Schutz vor Umwelteinflüssen bieten. Schildläuse verursachen insbesondere in Obstplantagen tropischer Länder jährliche Verluste in Millionen-Höhe. Die klassische biologische Bekämpfung mit exotischen Parasitoiden und Prädatoren hat teilweise zu ausgezeichneten Erfolgen geführt, worauf im vorliegenden Buch am Beispiel der Maniokschmierlaus in Afrika und der San-José-Schildlaus in Mitteleuropa näher eingegangen wird. Aber auch die Bedeutung der Schildläuse als Nützlinge wird beleuchtet. Im Mittelalter spielte in Mitteleuropa die Polnische Cochenilleschildlaus als Lieferantin von Purpurfarbstoff für Bekleidung eine bedeutende Rolle. Heute ist die Honigtauproduktion durch Cocciden wie die Physokermes-Arten wichtig. Honigtau bildet die Grundlage des Waldhonigs in der Imkerei und stellt außerdem eine wichtige Nahrungsquelle vieler Insektenarten dar, was sich auf die Artenvielfalt sehr positiv auswirken dürfte.
