Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book takes readers on a fascinating journey into the heart of Africa, where the author delves into the world of Sleeping Sickness, a devastating disease that plagued Uganda in the early 20th century. The book explores the history of the epidemic, tracing its origins and the devas…tating impact it had on the indigenous population. The author also delves into the complex interplay between the Trypanosome, the microscopic organism that causes the disease, and the Tse-Tse fly, its vector. The book goes beyond a simple scientific study, offering glimpses into the author's experiences as he lived and worked in the affected areas. Readers are treated to vivid descriptions of the stunning natural beauty of Lake Victoria and its islands, as well as fascinating accounts of the local wildlife, from monkeys and hippos to birds and reptiles. The author's detailed observations of the Tse-Tse fly and its habitat shed light on the factors that contribute to the spread of the disease, offering valuable insights into the fight against Sleeping Sickness. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good. xxiv, 333, [1], [32]-ads, 2 col plates, 87 b/w photos, charts, folding map. . HB. 8vo, orig. cloth, gilt title and vignette to spine, blind-stamped title and tse-tse fly design to front board; corners slightly bumped, fore- and bottom page edges uncut. Very good. From the library of British dipterist, D.J.… Greathead (1931-2006), with his name to endpaper. First edition. Two chromolithographic plates of mimetic butterflies by E.C. Knight. An engaging early-20th-century natural history narrative, Carpenter's work records his observations of the flora, fauna, and ecological conditions of the Lake Victoria region made whilst undertaking research on the bionomics of the Tse-tse fly (Glossina palpalis) in Uganda for the London School of Tropical Medicine. Blending scientific insight with travel writing, it offers an important contemporary account of East African biodiversity and one of the period's most accessible studies of the lake's environment and its biological communities. Geoffrey Douglas Hale Carpenter (1882-1953) was a British entomologist and medical doctor. He worked at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and in Uganda, on tse-tse flies and sleeping sickness. His main work in entomology was on mimicry in butterflies, an interest he developed while in Africa. He succeeded E.B. Poulton as Hope Professor of Zoology at Oxford University from 1933 to 1948.
