Blake, p. 102. Le concept d' "irritabilité" remonte aux travaux de Glisson, dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle; en résumé, il s'agissait d'une propriété spécifique de tous les tissus. Sept décennies plus tard, Haller en consigne la preuve expérimentale, tout en distinguant l'impulsion nerveuse (sensibilité) et la contraction musculaire (irritabilité). Les conclusions de Haller suscitent rapidement une polémique européenne, impliquant de nombreux savants. À l'Université de Vienne, les intrigues sont particulièrement vives au cours des années 1761-1763, autour de la figure de Anton de Haen (1704-1776), l'un des plus grands praticiens de son temps. Ce dernier qualifie la théorie de l'irritabilité de dangereuse pour la science médicale, rejette la méthode de Haller fondée sur des expérimentations animales et conteste enfin l'idée que les tendons et membranes soient insensibles. S'ensuivent des échanges inamicaux entre les deux savants ? nourris notamment par les lettres de Heinrich Johann Nepomuk Crantz écrites à Haller ? ainsi que des tentatives de médiation menées par le savant suisse Charles Bonnet, qui aboutiront, finalement, à un apaisement du conflit en 1770.
