Sept décennies plus tard, Haller en consigne la preuve expérimentale, tout en distinguant l'impulsion nerveuse (sensibilité) et la contraction musculaire (irritabilité). Les conclusions de Haller suscitent rapidement une polémique européenne, impliquant de nombreux savants. À l'Université de Vienne, les intrigues sont particulièrement vives au cours des années 1761-1763, autour de la figure de Anton de Haen (1704-1776), l'un des plus grands praticiens de son temps. Ce dernier qualifie la théorie de l'irritabilité de dangereuse pour la science médicale, rejette la méthode de Haller fondée sur des expérimentations animales et conteste enfin l'idée que les tendons et membranes soient insensibles.
