Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This 6.75 x 10.0 inch, 256 page hardcover book is the 1950 first edition of this title by the University of California Press. This book is in near fine condition with only modest time wear showing to the brick red cloth covers with gilt titling on the spine. The 750 copies were printed for the Friends of the Bancroft Library on Westgate Press in June 1950 as stated on the colophon. The covers show just a touch of wear at the corners and bottom edges but nothing has even begun to wear through. The rear pastedown shows a small lettered stamp From the library of - and then the name inked out by the previous owner. There is a curious bit of discoloration to the front cover panel as if possibly something was spilled on the cloth but this is really negligible. The interior is in fine condition with no markings or damage to the text pages with attractive deckled edges to the front edges of the text block and with a photograph of Robert Eccleston facing the title page. The book features a 12-page introduction with the text printing of Eccleston s diary arranged by date and accompanied by two fold-out maps. Both the maps in fine condition.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition thus, first printing. Complete in two volumes. Original green cloth lettered and illustrated in gilt to spine and front panel. Upper edges gilt. A lovely, very near fine set, the bindings square and firm with a little softening to the lower spine tips, the cloth and gilt sharp and bright. The contents, with toning to the endpapers are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Small closed tear to the outer edge of Vol. II, p. 295/6. A lovely bright set. 'Sir Charles Grandison', Richardson's final novel is, like its predecessors, 'Pamela' and 'Clarissa', an epistolary novel; and, like Clarissa, it is very long indeed, originally appearing across seven volumes between November 1753 and March 1754. Richardson's portrait of a "Good Man" (after the female protagonists of the earlier novels) has not endured either in reputation or print compared to the earlier novels but, as John Dussinger remarks, "in 1754 Richardson reported to Lady Bradshaigh [the] novel had much more success with the public than 'Clarissa', receiving enthusiastic responses from such diverse readers as William Cowper, who wrote an ode on its behalf, Edward Gibbon, and Lord Chesterfield". Jane Austen, another fan, dramatized scenes from the novel for family performance. Samuel Johnson famously remarked that "if you were to read Richardson for the story, your impatience would be so much fretted that you would hang yourself. But you must read him for the sentiment, and consider the story as only giving occasion to the sentiment", and this two-volume abridgement by the influential critic and literary historian, George Saintsbury, is an attempt to convey the sentiment without the length (to lose some of the bathwater without forfeiting the baby). The edition is also notable for its finely detailed illustrations (both within and adorning the cloth) by the English artist Christiana Mary Demain Hammond (18601900). A member of Hugh Thomson's Cranford School, Hammond's elegant pen and ink drawings are a perfect complement to Richardson's prose. First Edition. 118pp. Folio [36 cm] Full green cloth with the title gilt stamped on the backstrip. Near fine. The discovery of gold on the American River, east of Sacramento, on January 24, 1848, caused Stockton to transform from a small settlement to a thriving commercial center, supplying miners heading up to the Sierra foothills. Stockton got its start when Captain Charles M. Weber, a German immigrant, decided to try his hand at gold mining in late 1848 but soon discovered serving the needs of gold-seekers was a more profitable opportunity. He then founded Stockton in 1849 when he purchased over 49,000 acres of land through a Spanish land grant. Saunders 53.
