As is the case with most American families [sic] he could not boast an ancestry. . . When he was 14 years of age [sic] Ward was apprenticed as a compositor to the Skowhegan Clarion; next year he became a compositor on the Carpet Bag, a comic weekly published in Boston His first printed contribution appeared in the Carpet Bag. . . Being of a restless disposition, Ward left Boston and travelled as a journeyman printer over most of New York and Massachusetts. Arriving in Tiffin, Ohio. . . he was offered a position as a reporter on the Plaindealer, a daily paper in Cleveland. . . ." Brilliant condition for a book more than 95 years old.
