Am Martinsabend 1498 kehrte er… nach Köln zurück. Seine Erlebnisse legte er in einem detaillierten Reisebericht nieder, welcher hier erstmals in neuhochdeutscher Übersetzung komplett vorgelegt und als kommentierte Leseausgabe einem breiteren Publikum zugänglich gemacht wird.Arnold von Harff verstand sein Buch ausdrücklich als eine Art Reisehandbuch und sich selbst als Dichter und Pilger. Er besaß eine ungewöhnlich vielseitige,an geographischen, völkerkundlichen, sprach- und kulturgeschichtlichen Einzelheiten interessierte Beobachtungsgabe. Aus keinem anderen zeitgenössischen Reisebericht gewinnen wir ein derart farbiges und lebendiges Bild von Italien, der Welt des Islam, von Palästina und den alltäglichen und religiösen Besonderheiten des spätmittelalterlichen Pilgerwesens. Die Begegnungen des Reisenden mit fremden Herrschern, Adligen, Kaufleuten, Reiseführern und auch mit Räubern verleihen seinem Bericht eine ganz besondere Aura. Akribisch dokumentierte er die zurückgelegten Wegstrecken, die Fortbewegungsmittel, die Reisekosten und die zu erzielenden Ablässe. Es ist gerade diese Verbindung von Dokumentation und persönlicher Erfahrung, die die überragende kulturhistorische Bedeutung dieses Reiseberichts ausmacht.
