Jahrhunderts ihren Anfang nimmt und die wir heute gern als Spätantike bezeichnen, ist eine der eigen…artigsten Epochen der Kunstgeschichte. In den Bauten der römischen Kaiser vor allem zeigt sich in dieser Zeit noch einmal die ganze Macht und Größe der antiken Kunst. Wir denken etwa an den Konstantinsbogen in Rom, den Kaiserpalast in Spalato oder die große Basilika in Trier, um nur ganz wenige der eindrucksvollsten zu nennen. Das meiste ist längst der Zerstörung anheimgefallen, und auch von den großen Kirchen, die damals mit Hilfe des Staates an allen Enden des Reiches entstanden, blieb nur weniges erhalten. Aber dieses allein, selbst wo es sich um Ruinen handelt, genügt, um uns die schöpferische Kraft jener Zeit eindringlich vor Augen zu führen. [.] Erfreulich ist, daß wir im Katalog alle Stücke abbilden konnten. Die Stücke sind an so verschiedenen Stellen veröffentlicht, daß es den Besuchern angenehm sein wird, die Abbildungen jederzeit zur Hand zu haben. Es sind auch nicht ganz wenige, die hier zum erstenmal veröffentlicht werden. Unser Wunsch, zu den Abbildungen für jedes Stück auch die notwendigen sonstigen Angaben, einschließlich der Literatur, folgen zu lassen, war in der uns zur Verfügung stehenden Zeit nur schwer zu verwirklichen.
