A surprisingly diverting series of 8 letters between January and May 1864 from the 2nd Lord Henley to the engineers Sharman and Smith of Wellingborough, who had installed a "new heating apparatus" in Watford Court which nearly burned it down. He attempts to get them to remedy the problems with the installation, which they are evidently not very keen to do. The correspondence begins with reports of a leak, and 11 days later of a fire which fortunately happened in the daytime, or else could have resulted in loss of life. Negotiations didn't go terribly well, and Henley withheld payment of an outstanding sum to them, which they objected to. A masterful letter of rejection stands out "Lord Henley declines to make any change in the course which he has adopted." Watford Court in Northants survived the threat of fire, but only for another hundred years or so, and was demolished in the 1970s.…
