Tidsrummet er iden…tisk med Den Danske Banks hidtidige virkeår, og for at markere det har banken ønsket at støtte de mange udstillinger. Men 125 år er for kort et tidsrum til også at rumme værker af Danmarks mest kendte billedhugger, Bertel Thorvaldsen, der døde i 1844. På den anden side ville det være mærkeligt, hvis ikke netop Thorvaldsens Museum skulle bidrage til en præsentation af den danske skulptur. Så stor var Thorvaldsens betydning for hans samtids og eftertids billedhuggere at den så rigeligt når ind i de sidste 125 år. Og hans værk er stadig vedkommende og uomgåeligt for mange billedhuggere i dag. Vi har derfor på Thorvaldsens Museum valgt som vores bidrag til udstillingerne at tydeliggøre nogle grundlæggende, formmæssige forhold såvel i Thorvaldsens skulpturer som skulpturer fra vort eget århundrede ved at sammenstille udvalgte værker af Thorvaldsen med nyere skulptur. En lignende sammenstilling af nyt og gammelt har før fundet sted. På udstillingen "Figurfald", der vistes på Brandts Klædefabrik og Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek i 1992, tog en række unge billedhuggere Thorvaldsen ind som medspiller - ikke for at hylde den gamle mester men for at forholde sig kunstnerisk til hans kunst. Det samme kunne Thorvaldsen have gjort. Han ville jo heller ikke blot kopiere antikkens kunst, når han støttede sig så kraftigt til den, som han gjorde. Han ville skabe en levende kunst i sin egen tid. Og da han i 1819 stod foran Hans Bruggemanns sengotiske altertavle fra begyndelsen af 1500-tallet i Schleswig Domkirke var han ikke i tvivl om dens kunstneriske kvaliteter. Det gjorde ikke alle i hans samtid. Altertavlen var i fare for at blive taget ned. Thorvaldsen var med til at redde den. Det er vigtigt at fastholde en dialog mellem ældre og ny kunst, og det er vigtigt at fastholde værdien af det sete på tværs af årstal og stilhistorie. Med udstillingen "Skulpturens væsen" og denne bog håber vi at bidrage til begge dele. Udlånerne af de 28 skulpturer - kunstnere såvel som museer - skal takkes for deres store imødekommenhed til de mange lån.
