Die Neubewertung des Griechenlandfeldzuges anhand dieser Inschrift ist weder ein Korrektiv der bestehenden Forschung noch ein Versuch, den Feldzug ereignis- oder militärgeschichtlich umfänglich zu rekonstruieren. Vielmehr nutzt Klinkott sie als Schlüssel für das Verständnis ganz anderer, großköniglicher Akzente, Zielsetzungen und Bewertungen, die damit auch das Gesamtbild des Feldzuges prägen. Denn anders als aus griechischer Sicht war das Unternehmen für Xerxes unter gewissen Aspekten durchaus ein Erfolg. Aus dem Inhalt: 1. Die Kriegsentscheidung des Xerxes in den griechischen Quellen; 2. Aus dem Vorwort: »Die historische "Wahrheit" ist [.] mit Sicherheit [.] nicht durch die Darstellung nur einer Seite zu erklären. In diesem Sinne widmet sich das vorliegende Buch "entlang der Gräben" der sogenannten Perserkriege [.] im Besonderen dem Feldzug Xerxes I. nach Griechenland. Im Mittelpunkt steht der Versuch, sich gezielt der nicht-griechischen Perspektive zu widmen, die als die der "Anderen" bislang kaum ernsthaft zu Kenntnis genommen wurde, diese zu verstehen und zu rekonstruieren. Der Xerxesfeldzug aus der Sicht der Perser, genauer: des achaimenidischen Großkönigs, folgte zweifellos einem ganz anderen Narrativ, das der griechischen Wahrnehmung eines Herodot entgegenstand. Dementsprechend versucht diese Arbeit, bekannte Erklärungsmuster aufzubrechen und in das Verständnis des achaimenidischen Großkönigs einzuordnen. Die "neuen Lesarten" sollen dabei keineswegs als "Korrekturen" der griechischen Überlieferung und Geschichte verstanden werden, sondern als Deutungsvorschläge und -hypothesen einer anderen, eben der achaimenidischen Perspektive.
