Ex-library copy with top of paper library slip first fly leaf page. Text body clean. Book block clean. Front and back boards clean. Spine intact. Over-all an excellent and neat copy. Georgiana McCrae was one of the first hundred settlers where millions have their home today. Her genteel yet candid voice introduces Port Phillip as a rustic outpost - before prosperity, culture and urbanisation put Melbourne on the map in bold letters. With her eye for detail, and a natural way with words and pictures, she shares the colourful everyday lives of people who took over a wilderness and built a colony. Georgiana's gifted grandson, the poet Hugh McCrae, constructed this book from her journals, sketches and miniatures. It has since been a favourite, but few readers know how much there is of the playful and mischievous Hugh in the edited words of Georgianna. In this new edition Marguerite Handcock's fascinating observations real life. "one of the most valuable records of Melbourne life in the 1840's, the journal is also remarkable as the reflection of a distinctive, lively personality." - Oxford Companion to Australia Literature.

She was a portrait artist, linguist, musician and diarist. Georgiana Huntly McCrae arrived in Sydney with her husband, Andrew McCrae, and children in March 1839. By 1842, the family had settled at Mayfield House on the Yarra River. The family moved again to Dromana in 1845. According to her biographer Norman Cowper, Georgiana was a woman of strong character, exceptional education, wit, charm and cultivated taste, and was a significant figure in the early days of settlement in Victoria.
