The story of the founding of the British Nepal Medical Trust. Dr John Cunningham served as a ship¿s doctor and then four and half years in hospital service. He and his wife Penny both shared a love of adventure and a desire to use their training where it was urgently needed. Nepal, they learned, had only 200 doctors for its eleven million people. They contacted the Director of Health Services in Kathmandu offering their services with a team of doctors and nurses which was promptly accepted. After he made a preliminary investigation in Nepal a team of colleagues was recruited and pharmaceutical and other companies approached for their support. In April 1968 the team of six doctors, four nurses and a young mechanic set off for Nepal in three Land Rovers to undertake the 8000 mile journey to Nepal. The Government of Nepal had asked them to set up their base at Biratnagar. In the first six months they had started the modernisation and improvement of the hospital. The work then extended into the hills and to remote areas of the country in a battle against tuberculosis. By 1972 72% of the 250,000 children under the age of 18 in the Kosi province, an area of 3000 square miles of difficult terrain, had been BCG vaccinated. Even after his return to the UK, while working as a GP, he continued his support for the work continuing in Nepal by acting as a Trustee and Chairman of BNMT until his death in 1990. Repair to a couple of tears to top edge of D/JPrev owners message inside. price clipped to D/J. This book is not a formal autobiography from the cradle to the cross benches of the House of Lords. It is more a reflection on facets of a life which has involved travel and climbing in equal parts with professional soldiering, and pioneering and administration in the fields of education. Apart from the triumph of Everest in 1953, Lord Hunt's mountaineer memories include alpine-style climbing in the Karakoram and the Himalayas before the second world war; later joint expeditions with Russian climbers in the Caycasys and the Pamirs; exploration in unclimbed parts of Greenland and the Yukon; more relaxed excusrions to Mount Sinai and Athos; as well as numerous climbs nearer home in the Alps where he learnt his skills and has watched the changing moods of that playground of Europe for five decades. Other chapters describe Intelligence work in Bengal in the thirties, war experiences in italy and Greece, the setting up and establishing of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, heading the British Relief Mission to Nigeria during the Civil War, and thoughts on penal reform, and the role of the House of Lords. Here is a full life in full measure, a reflection on some of the events and preoccupations which have broadened the horizons of our century. Illustrated. 286 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

A History of the Royal College of General Practitioners: The First 25 Years (1983) is a detailed institutional chronicle of how British general practice professionalised, organised, and ultimately reshaped its own identity in the mid‑20th century. It is both a documentary history and a reflective insider account, written by those who helped build the College itself. The editors emphasise that the College was built by practising GPs who balanced heavy clinical workloads with voluntary organisational labour—an ethos that shaped its culture and priorities Ref O 5.
