L'auteur défend la nouvelle hypothèse du candidat astronaute bruxellois Pletser : que cet os n'est pas un calendrier lunaire; qu'il ne constitue pas plus un jeu arithmétique avec des nombres premiers mais est un simple bâton à compter, d'un peuple qui comptait d'une façon non-occidentale. L'arithmétique alternative, ce n'est pas si étrange : les mathématiques "black" sont déjà d'usage depuis longtemps aux Etats-Unis. En Belgique, les mathématiques multiculturelles sont plutôt méconnues, malgré les liens historiques avec le Congo. Toutefois, l'Institut royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique (IRSNB) et le Musée royal d'Afrique centrale (MRAC) de Tervuren possèdent des collections particulières, et une visite mathématique s'y impose. En plus, le domaine a des implications actuelles, comme dans les frac-tales très africaines ou le jeu bantumi, tandis que les ingénieurs et les informaticiens ont du pain sur la planche, quand ils voient les multiplications yorubas et éthiopiennes. Ces ethnomathématiques peuvent non seulement plaire aux mathématiciens, mais aussi aux esprits rêveurs, qui méditent sur le devenir des sciences et de l'humanité, comme dans 2001, Odyssée de l'Espace.

Sure, to many, mathematics seems to come from hell, but the darkness in the title in fact refers to the lugubrious stories about math and skulls, murders or World War II. There is also a more down-to-earth part about math and maps, money, Facebook, folding paper, shapes in ice and the most earthly yet unsolved math problems. 'Bright mathematics' alludes to Vedic, Islam, New Age, a meta-divine section, and is concluded by an interview with a top mathematician who also wrote about the existence of God.
