Hardcover. Condizione: VG+. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG+. 1st. When Rex Forrester decided to become an author he was already a professional deer culler and a pioneer in NZ Safari-type tours, introducing international groups to the country's unique hunting, shooting and fishing opportunities. His own huntiing experiences bagan when he was 12 years old and he advanced to become a professional hunter for deer skins, then as a Government culler of the species to reduce the growing number of introduced animal ":pests." By 1956 he recognised that NZ's varied wild animal population, including deer, pigs, big-game fish and trout would be attractive to tourists. His sport safari idea caught on quickly and drew many hunters and fisherman from overseas countries including Britain, USA, Australia and Europe. When considering compiling this book Forrester was busy with his safari expeditions so joined forces will journalist Neil Illingworth who, he said, "was responsible for sorting out the thousands of words I have written into something that at least looks like a book.," In that book about half the text relates to Forrester's early stalking days and those he spent as a professional hunter and as a Government culler, with most of the remainder dealing with the safari days, with its ups and downs but with many humerous incidents too. He also deals with the controversial deer (and other introduced feral species) control issue in which extremists demanded extermination, while the hunter lobby favoured culling and sport shooting. In his final chatper Forrester contemplates the future of hunting in NZ. It is headed "Paradise Threatrened" and includes the warning "We live in a hunter's paradise and we should never forget the fact, otherwise we might wake up one day to find that it's all gone." "Hunter For Hire' marked the beginning of a series of popular Forrester hunting/fishing books and many of the observations he made then remain valid today. First edition from Reed in 1963, 187 pages, illustrated with 46 b/w photos, most taken by the author, "Sportsman's Year" calendar at front, end-paper maps show distribution areas of game animals. Grey hard covers with silver spine titles and deer head decoration to front are VG+, former owner stamp top margin FFEP, this copy has inked auithor inscription :"Good Hunting From Rex Forrester" on half-title verso below a deer head drawing, the text block is excellent. Angling for shark, marlin, swordfish, tuna and other big game species in New Zealand waters. "Since Zane Grey's books first drew the attention of world fishermen to his fabulous success in New Zealand waters, the sport has been brought to a very high level. But since Zane Grey there has been no book to show this progress, to describe the sport in all its aspects, or to record the stories of battles with great game fish along the New Zealand coast. The author has visited all New Zealand's game fishing regions - Whangaroa, the Bay of Islands, Whangarei (Tutukaka), Mercury Bay (Whitianga) and Touranga (Mayor Island) - talked with those who initiated the sport and those who are now its main administrators and participants, and spent many days at sea. Contributing also to this book are R.C. Dinsdale (secretary of the Whangarei Club and past-secretary of the federated clubs), J.M. Moreland (ichthyologist to the Dominion Museum) and F. Wilkins (skipper of the Sou-East of Tauranaga)." Chapters include: The land and the sea; It started with Zane Grey; Grand days at sea; New Zealand's fighting mako; Game fishes of New Zealand; Tackle for big game fishing; Baiting, drifting and trolling; Finding and fighting game fish; Big game fishing with light tackle; Catching tuna and other light-tackle fish; New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council; International fishing contests in New Zealand; Whangaroa; The Bay of Islands; Whangarei (Tutukaka); Mercury Bay (Whitianga); Tauranga (Mayor Island); New Zealand and world records. .…
