The plates are vivid and almost glow with color. Some have bright gilt trim. Christmas, Easter, New Year's, Thanksgiving, May Day, St. Valentine's Day. et al.

The first part of the book is unpaginated and consists of a title-page and a dedication page, followed by 29 beautiful chromolithograph plates (each protected with a thin blank page). These are follow…ed by 9 numbered pages containing a brief description of each plate. All edges gilt. Each medieval-inspired illumination contains a line from the hymn Te Deum Laudamus, and the plates have been illuminated by Esther Faithfull Fleet (1823-1908), a gifted book illustrator. The chromolithographs are by M. & N. Hanhart, a London lithographic publishing house founded by Michael Hanhart and Nicholas Hanhart. They published a wide range of material including book illustrations and lithographic sheet music covers, and their best work was in the field of large chromolithographs. Hanhart used a complex layering of tint stones, to produce work unique in colouration and tonal values. The book is published by Emily Faithfull (1835-1895), an English women's rights activist who set up the Victoria Press to publish the English Woman's Journal. Publications of the Victoria Press included The Victoria Regia (1861), which earned Faithfull her position as the official printer to Queen Victoria. The book has been rebacked and recased in the original blue cloth covered bevelled boards with a new blue cloth spine. There is gold titling and design on the front board but no titling on the spine (we believe that this is as originally issued). There is shelf wear with some soiling and light staining on the boards and the corners are lightly bumped with damage and some loss to the cloth on the corner tips and bottom 1 1/2" of the fore edge of the front board. The contents are tight and clean and the book has new black endpapers. There is some scattered foxing but this is light and mostly affects the blank pages protecting the plates. Plates 18 and 25 have a water stain around the top spine corner, but this does not affect the illumination. Plate 10 appears to have been loose at some time as the top and bottom edges have been trimmed by about 1/4" and by about 1/16" on the fore edge. It also has a water stain around the top spine corner and a larger stain around the top fore corner and part of the top edge that does affect about 1/2" x 1 3/4" of the illumination. There is a small and faint water stain around the top corner of the title-page but no inscription. Esther Faithfull Fleet (illustratore).

All edges gilt. 11 unnumbered thick card leaves printed on rectos only, mounted on stubs, comprising a chromolithographic title page, followed by a pr…eface by Rev. Samuel Wilberforce printed in red and black, and 9 chromolithographic leaves in the style of an illuminated manuscript, richly coloured and incorporating gold and silver. One leaf embellished with an original albumen photographic vignette. Expertly re-cased. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a hint of wear to the spine ends and corners. The contents with a small area of abrasion to the front pastedown and some scattered foxing (heavier to the endpapers) are otherwise in very good order. A beautiful edition of the Romantic poet Felicia Heman's poem 'The Better Land', splendidly illuminated by Helen Baker and printed in chromolithography by Day & Son. As Samuel Wilberforce notes in his preface, the work was produced to aid the rebuilding of St James Church, Ramsden in Oxfordshire. Helen Baker was a younger sister to the Rev. Robert Lowbridge Baker then parish priest at Ramsden. We can trace no other publications by Baker, but she was certainly very talented, as Wilberforce asserts: "I believe that all who themselves are gifted with the power of appreciating beauty will thoroughly appreciate the genius which has designed, and the skill which has executed these illustrations". A scarce title, with only two institutional copies recorded by LibraryHub (Bodleian & Cambridge).

Aggiungi al carrelloEmily Faithfull (1835 - 1895) was Queen VictoriaÕs official printer, the founder of Victoria Press, a founding member of the Society for Promoting the Employment of Women, and a popular novelist and memoirist. Upon establishing the Victoria Press in 1860, she provided training for women interested in printing and employed mostly… women as typesetters and proofreaders. Other important Victoria Press publications included The Victoria Regia (1861), which earned Faithfull her position as the official printer to Queen Victoria, and A Welcome, a collection of poetry edited by Isa Craig that included the first appearances of poems by D.G. Rosetti, Harriet Martineau, and more. Faithfull also published the periodical Victoria Magazine, which ran from 1863 to 1880 and often featured FaithfullÕs own writing on the importance of employment opportunities for women. Esther Faithfull Fleet (1823 - 1908) was also the illustrator of 38 Texts (1872), which was published by her younger sister Emily and included contributions by their father Ferdinand (1789 Ð 1871); Roses With and Without Thorns (1878); and The Dayspring from on High (1904). [4] pp., [58] ll., 9 pp. Twenty-nine chromolithograph plates (each with a blank protective page) plus 9 pages of descriptions of the plates. The plates include depictions of the Ark of the Covenant with cherubim, enclosed in a 15th century-style border (plate #4); the emblems of 12 saints, including Saint PeterÕs keys (plate #7); and church windows with the cross, anchor, and heart symbols worked into the glass (plate #10). Original blue cloth stamped in gilt. Some soiling and wear to cloth. All edges gilt. Dark brown endpapers. Contemporary ink ownership signature to front flyleaf. Some foxing to blanks, as usual. A very good, clean copy of a beautiful book. First edition Michael Hanhart (1788Ð1865) and his son Nicholas Hanhart also chromolithographed the plates for Welby PuginÕs Glossary of Ecclesiastical Ornament and Costume (Henry Bohn, 1844), which McLean calls Òone of the outstanding color books of the Victorian periodÓ (McLean, Victorian Book Design, p. 115).
