Die Länder um die Ostsee von Finnland bis Estland, mit dabei Norwegen und Island, griffen den Gedanken auf und fanden zur lebendigen kulturellen Kooperation zusammen. Es war, wie man sagte, ein Zeichen zur rechten Zeit; die Mauer in Deutschland war gefallen, die Zeit des Aufbruchs zu Demokratie und Freiheit begann im Osten. In dieser Zeit entdecken Kunst und Kultur den endlich geöffneten Weg zur neuen Gemeinsamkeit. Den Anfang bildeten in Kiel zwei Prologveranstaltungen, zu denen die ehemalige Kultusministerin Eva Rühmkorf den engagierten Anstoß gegeben hatte; mit gleichem Einsatz fortgeführt wurden diese Ideen von ihrer Nachfolgerin Marianne Tidick. "Von Angesicht zu Angesicht": Unter diesem Titel ist junge Kunst aus den Ostseeländern in Kiel zu sehen, und im März 1991 war es JazzBaltica. In Kiel, Lübeck und Husum fand das über die Landesgrenzen hinaus viel beachtete neue Jazzfestival des "Mare Balticum" statt. Die musikalischen Ergebnisse dieser fünftägigen Veranstaltung sind es wert, rückblickend in Wort und Bild dokumentiert zu werden. Die beiden Tage im Kieler Audimax kann man getrost als Höhepunkt bezeichnen; es kam so etwas wie Festivalatmosphäre auf. Der für derartige Konzerte in letzter Zeit eher geschmähte Veranstaltungsort erwies sich als bestens geeignet: Zwei Fotoausstellungen konnten im Vorraum gezeigt werden, für die Zuschauer gab es dort vor und nach den Auftritten ausgiebig Gelegenheit zur Kommunikation. Der Backstage-Bereich war nicht hermetisch abgetrennt, und Gespräche mit den Musikern waren ohne weiteres möglich. So wie es auch von vielen Beteiligten wiederholt ausgesprochen wurde, sollte der Gedanke von JazzBaltica seine Fortsetzung finden - egal, ob in Kiel, Lübeck, Stockholm oder Kopenhagen.
