Full Leather. Condizione: Good. Moderately worn black leather cover that is also a case (edges come around the printed pages with a snap to close them). Title in gilt on spine and two gold lines around the edge of the cover. Spine ends badly frayed. Pages edged in red, lightly browned, otherwise very good. This work was first published anonymously in 1643 and became a European bestseller. Browne was a medical doctor, but was also revered as a man of general knowledge. The work is peculiar from its blending of deep religious feeling and skeptical views. "It appears to have been composed as a tour de force of intellectual agility, an attempt to combine daring skepticism with implicit faith in revelation." The style is metaphorical and artificial, with many Latinized words, but striking and impressive. No date inside book, but likely 1907.
