Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. First American Edition. New Haven, Connecticut; S. Babcock; 1845; 1st American Edition; Softcover; Very Good; Small tan chap book size soft cover. NOT ex-library, a very good unmarked copy. READ ON. First or second American edition, (first was London, 1838). Brown patterned cover decoration over… tan. Teller's Tales at top corners, Pastoral scene at lower center , with " Edited by Thomas Teller" top and " Beautiful Engravings" bottom, "embellished with new" to sides. Publishers' information iin lower oval. New Series, Number Five, in lower corners. Rear cover is publisher information on new books, "Just Published Uniform With the Present Work.Twelve new and beautiful Juvenile Books. Title page repeats cover information with an ornate surround and a different vignette, churches in a forest setting. Preface dated 1845. The inside back of both covers is green, and the two endpapers are green. Preface is unpaginated, then 3-64. Eight full page engravings as called for. One dime sized worn spot on rear cover not affecting lettering. Paper missing from spine. 169 year old text, plates very clean, very little foxing, nothing dark nor heavy. Hinges tight, string binding tight. Corners very good. A remarkable copy, very good. A note as to edition. Unlike this edition, the third edition has the engravings signed by E. Purcell, and lists twenty titles just published on the rear, not 12. So I presume that this is the first or second American. The few references I have seen may be simply counting the British first as THE first and this the second overall. Ferguson 4078, not in Lily nor McGill Chap book collections; Mitchell Library in NSW holds a copy. 4 1/2 X 5 1/2 inches.; Shelved in brown box.
