Prima edizione
First Edition. Limited to Seventy-One Copies [TWAIN, Mark]. UNDERHILL, Irving. Mark Twain's A Dog's Tale. Printed for the Editor of The American Book Collector, 1931. First edition, limited to seventy-one numbered copies, this being copy 32. Octavo (8 1/8 x 5 1/8 in; 206 x 130 mm). 19, [1, blank] pp. Publisher's original printed string bound wrappers. A fine copy. An extremely scarce private-press issue of Mark Twain's poignant and deceptively simple short story, originally published in 1904 and widely regarded as one of his most affecting moral fables. Narrated from a dog's perspective, A Dog's Tale blends sentiment, satire, and quiet cruelty to explore themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and human indifference-anticipating the darker, more skeptical tone of Twain's late prose. Issued in an edition of only seventy-one copies for Irving Underhill, editor of The American Book Collector, this printing was clearly intended for a small circle of bibliophiles rather than the general market. Copies are rarely encountered, particularly in such fine condition. As both a desirable Twain curiosity and a product of early twentieth-century American bibliophilic culture, it makes an appealing addition to collections focused on Twain, private press printing, or literary ephemera. BAL Sec. II, p. 253, col. 1.

Fotografia
No Binding. Condizione: Good. Silver print photograph, 10.5" x 14". A scarce photograph by noted New York City commercial photographer Irving Underhill (1872 1960) showing curb brokers trading stocks in the outdoor market on Broad St. in Manhattan s financial district. During the late-1800s and early-1900s, curbstone brokers conducted trading on the actual street-curbs of financial districts the most famous curb market being the one pictured here on Broad St. These brokers ran informal, semi-illegitimate stock market enterprises from 1900 to 1921 shouting and gesturing from office windows to the street below, as can be seen in this image. The brokers tended to trade stocks that were especially speculative in nature, as well as stocks in small companies producing iron, textiles, chemicals, etc. In 1921 the outdoor market moved into a new home the American Stock Exchange at 86 Trinity Place, Manhattan. By restricting risky securities to the curb, the NYSE managed to preserve its reputation while still making a market for these more speculative stocks. Some of the best stocks such as Coca Cola, General Motors, Shell, Standard Oil, Goldwyn Pictures and Phillip Morris started on the curb and soon moved inside to the NYSE. REFERENCES: Daly, Ann. The New York Curb Market Which Has No Organization Whatever (2018) at gothamcenter[dot]org. CONDITION: Occasional fading but good tonality overall, light wear to edges.

[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Underhill, Irving.SOCRATES GOLDENROD SLEE. [Buffalo, New York:Irving Underhill, ca. 1925] Facsimile of a "CatCard" used by Susan Crane when giving away catsafter one of Twain's summer stays at Quarry Farm,Elmira, New York. The Clemens always brought catsfrom Hartford when they summered with theirin-laws, Susan and Theodore Crane, at Elmira.Twain would name them after philosophers and Jean, who didn't like those names, gave them last namesbased upon wildflowers; they were then given athird name taken from a family or neighbor. JohnSlee was a Langdon family business associate andtrusted friend of Twain (cf. LETTERS, pp. 159-60).When the Clemenses returned home, it fell to SusanCrane to distribute the surplus cats among friendsand neighbors, and she used cards like this onefor that purpose. Irving Underhill, the publisherof THE NIAGARA BOOK (1893), produced thisfacsimile some years later; a similar facsimilewas printed for Underhill in 1926, hence theestimated date.
