Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. **Of Great Importance in the History of Tech invention of a reliable battery, the first constant source of electric energy.** DANIELL, J. FREDERIC (two papers). "On Voltaic Combinations." In a Letter addressed to Michael Faraday. Received January 26, - Read February 11, 1836. AND a second paper: "Additional Observations on Voltaic Combinations. In a Letter to Michael Faraday." Received April 14, - Read April 21, 1836. In a bound volume of the Philosophical Transactions, London, Richard Taylor, 1836. The Daniell papers occupy pp 107-124 and an engraved plate; and pp 125-129 with an engraved plate. Viii, ix, 620, (8)pp. This is the full volume for vol 126, 1836, Part I. The volume has been newly and beautifully rebound in half-calf and marbled boards, with gilt dentelles on spine with raised bands. Provenance: Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, with their small 1" oval embossed stamp on the first 10 pages of the volume. Text is VG; binding is New. [++] This (first paper) is the first appearance of Daniell's first paper on the construction of the famous "Daniell-Cell", in which he announced his invention of the battery, the first constant and reliable source of electric energy. It is difficult to overstate the importance of this invention. [++] "By lessening polarization, John Daniell (1790-1845) improves the voltaic electric cell and replaces it with a "Daniell cell" which more reliably produces a steady current".--Claire Parkinson, "Breakthroughs", 306. [++] "John Frederic Daniell was a British chemist and meteorologist. Appointed the first professor of chemistry at King s College in London in 1831, he invented a number of important measuring devices, including the pyrometer, which won him the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society. But his most important scientific contribution was his invention of the Daniell Cell in 1836. Before Daniell, electrical experiments depended on voltage generated by voltaic cells. Voltaic piles provided a continuous source of electricity, but they lost power rapidly. Daniell's improved cell drew power more evenly during its continuous operation, expanding the range of possibilities for the application of electricity. Daniell solved the problem of energy loss by taming the buildup of hydrogen in voltaic piles. Putting a barrier between the copper and zinc plates prevented hydrogen from forming, and thus stopped the battery's polarization. In 1837, Daniell received the Royal Society's highest award, the Copley Medal, for his battery. His invention would power a host of emerging technologies, including telegraphy."--ETHW website (Daniell Cell"). "Research in the still new field of current electricity was at this time hindered by the rapid decline in power of the voltaic cell when in use, because of reverse polarization. Investigating the standard zinc copper battery, he found that the decline in power was caused by the liberation of hydrogen gas on the copper plate during electrolysis. In an 1836 Philosophical Transactions paper he therefore proposed a new form of apparatus (known familiarly as the Daniell cell) to prevent such liberation and thus maintain a continuous and even current."--Complete DSB online.
