Auf die Epidemiologie des Alkoholismus wird in Bd. 9 im Zusammenhang mit der Bedeutung der Epidemiologie für Prävention und Krankenversorgung eingegangen. Die klinischen Themen sind nach den Krankheitsbildern (Abhängigkeit von Alkohol, Drogen, Medikamenten und Nikotin) und ihrer Therapie gegliedert. Neu ist die Erörterung der Schnüffelsucht, der Drogenpsychosen und vor allem der Nikotinabhängigkeit, ferner beim Alkoholismus der Genetik und Biochemie sowie die Darstellung der internistischen Folgeerkrankungen und der teratogenen Schäden. Der Unterschied zwischen diesem Band und den Suchtkapiteln in der 1. und 2. Auflage von Psychiatrie der Gegenwart zeigt deutlich die Aktualität der Suchtkrankheiten heute, aber auch unser vermehrtes Wissen davon. In der 1. wie in der 2. Auflage stand der Alkoholismus noch ganz im Vordergrund; 1960 und 1972 gab es jeweils nur einen Beitrag über nichtalkoholische Süchte, wobei in der 1.
