hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Ebenezer; or, "Hitherto hath the Lord helped us," A Narrative of the Lord's Dealings with One of His Ancient People, J. G. Lazarus â" 1st Edition Publication: London, J. Nisbet & Co., 1841 Formatting: 8vo. Condition Report: Very Good. The volume remains securely and tightly bound in its original publisher's brown ribbed cloth, which has been remarkably well-preserved beneath a protective mylar sleeve. The blind-stamped arabesque panelling to the boards is crisp, unrubbed, and demonstrates virtually no shelf-wear, while the corners remain sharply defined with minimal bumping. The spine has suffered some mild sun-fading, a common affliction for Victorian cloth of this dye, yet the gilt lettering remains sharply legible and the structural integrity is uncompromised. Internally, the text block is sound with untrimmed fore and lower edges that display standard, mild age-toning. The preliminary leaves exhibit some faint, scattered foxing typical of the paper stock of this era, though the main body of the text appears largely clean. A contemporary ink ownership signature ("Hesketh") to the front free endpaper represents the only notable internal marking. Overall, an exceptionally solid and attractive surviving example of a fragile nineteenth-century narrative. Catalogue Note: First edition. A uniquely scarce personal narrative of Jewish conversion in nineteenth-century England, complete with an engraved frontispiece portrait (partially visible opposite the title page). The author, J. G. Lazarus, served as the Superintendent of the Liverpool Institution for Inquiring and Converted Jews, a missionary body established to support Jewish converts to Christianity. The book is dedicated to the Reverend Hugh M'Neile (Incumbent of St. Jude's, Liverpool), an influential evangelical figure who actively advocated for the conversion of "God's ancient people" and worked alongside Lazarus. This volume provides significant primary insight into the Victorian evangelical movement and the specific societal structures that facilitated these religious transitions. The presence of a contemporary ownership signature provides a modest trace of provenance. The title is exceptionally rare on the open market, with institutional holdings proving incredibly limited (the State Library of Victoria notably holds a copy associated with the Eureka Stockadeâs Samuel Lazarus), and it is virtually unrepresented in recent auction records or active online retail inventories. A rare and compelling historical document from the heart of the Victorian evangelical movement, Ebenezer details the spiritual and physical journey of J. G. Lazarus, an active figure in 1840s Liverpool. Moving from "the darkness of rabbinical Judaism into the light and blessings of Christianity," Lazarusâs narrative transcends mere autobiography to serve as a functional testament and missionary tool of its time. Superintending the Liverpool Institution for Inquiring and Converted Jews, Lazarus offers modern readers and historians a unique, first-hand window into the complex cultural and religious dynamics of Anglo-Jewish relations and conversion societies in nineteenth-century Britain.
