Bellin (1703-1772) was an engineer and geographer with the French navy and it was his responsibility make maps of all known seacoasts. This set of maps produced in 1757 includes the Great Lakes, Virginia, New England, Florida, New York, Carolina & Georgia, Boston, New Orleans, Quebec and the St. Lawrence River. Stiff paper covers include the usual exlibrary stamps and labels. Interior has no library marking except for an inventory number on the table of contents page. The front & back cover each have a 1 inch tear at the edge. Please view photo(s) to determine exact condition.

Extremely Rare and even rarer in this condition ! Enlarged Edition of John Ogilby's 1675 published "Britannia" with engraved plates in strip form of the principal roads of England and Wales. This being the Paris Edition by John Senex with John Ogilby's maps reduced in size and enlarged/supplemented with 12 additional maps and 17 engraved plans/plates. John Ogilby (also Ogelby, Oglivie; November 1600 4 September 1676) was a Scottish translator, impresario and cartographer. Best known for publishing the first British road atlas, he was also a successful translator, noted for publishing his work in handsome illustrated editions. (Wikipedia).

From the full French title 'Carte de l'Archipel de St Lazare ou Les Isles Marianas', this map was presumably once part of a double-page spread that depicted maps of both the Mariana Islands and the Philippines. Unfortunately the second page depicting the Philippines is not present. Image size 145 x 295 mm approx, light tanning to the page edges otherwise fine condition with clear image, good colours and margins. Now in a protective plastic sleeve.

Jaques Nicolas Bellin (1702-720) was the most important French hydrographer of the 18th century. St Helena Bay was "discovered" by the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama on 7 Nov. 1497, during his pioneer voyage from Europe to India. He named the bay after Saint Helena, a devout, influential Christian and mother of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great.

James Cook; one shows the entrance to the River Endeavour and the other of Botany Bay. Cook and his crew spent eight weeks repairing their ship (HMS Endeavour) in the estuary, during this time it allowed the two eminent botanists on the expedition - Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander to explore and gather samples. Their work was marked by the naming of two points at the entrance of Botany Bay, Cape Banks and Point Solander.
