This volume deals with astronomy, light, colours, shadow, fire, history of experimental physics (including geographical discoveri…es) and history of theoretical physics. The book contains an engraved frontispiece by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783) and 28 plates and maps (e.g., solar and lunar eclipses, constellations, world map, Egyptian gods, map of Phoenician colonies, map of ancient Greece, Ptolemy world map, armillary sphere, maps of the Mediterranean Sea, Scandinavia, America and Asia, thermometers, movement of the planets); almost all of these copper engravings were made by Pierre Bourgoin; the engraving of thermometers was made by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. L'exemplaire a subi des restaurations à certaines planches et la reliure a été confectionnée au 19ème siècle dans un souci de conservation de l'ouvrage : reliure demi-toile à coins, état satisfaisant, solide et compacte. Malgré des traces de salissures à certaines pages et des restaurations parfois visibles, l'exemplaire est de bonne tenue et bien complet, pour un ouvrage rare et recherché. Grand in-folio, (1ff. Titre) 11 planches doubles et 20pp. texte. [On joint] Une grande et rare gravure collée sur carton intitulée Clémence du Peuple, "Le peuple sur la place d'armes à Strasbourg demande par acclamation la grâce du chef de l'insurrection etc.".Magnificent work complete with its 11 superb double plates and 20 pages of text offering the description of the festivals. The copy has undergone restorations to certain plates and the binding was made in the 19th century with a view to preserving the work: half-cloth binding with corners, satisfactory condition, solid and compact. Despite traces of soiling on certain pages and sometimes visible restorations, the copy is in good condition and very complete, for a rare and sought-after work. Large folio, (1ff. Title) 11 double plates and 20pp. text. [Attached] A large and rare engraving pasted on cardboard entitled Clémence du Peuple, "The people on the parade ground in Strasbourg ask by acclamation for the pardon of the leader of the insurrection etc.

The first folio edition and most desirable edition of this work (first issued in 16mo editions in 1729-1731, without Parrocel's illustratins).
