Unable to contemplate completion of the waterway because of a paucity of resources, the company+s agents and adherents were nevertheless instrumental in attracting the interest of the United States government which concluded a purchase of New Company assets in 1904. Though primarily a company history, the work examines the economic and political background against which the drama unfolded. The author was born in Peterhead, Scotland, and received his education at the universities of Aberdeen, Stockholm and Kent/Canterbury. He has published in the fields of both French history and film. Amazingly, and despite its pivotal role in dictating the content of motion pictures for the best part of three decades, there exists only one full-length work on the subject. That is an unemendated doctoral thesis of barely forty-three thousand words by Paul W. Facey, S.J., dating from 1945 and therefore covering only the first eleven years of the Legion's existence, which is based almost entirely on published sources." - from the author's introduction.…
