Het verschijnsel exposities ter bevordering van de afzet heeft zo veel facetten, dat deze welhaast niet in één publicatie zijn te bundelen. Bovendien zijn vele van deze facetten weer zo innig verweven met andere problemen, dat het vrijwel onmogelijk is zich bij de behandeling strikt te bepalen tot de exposities zelf. De vorenbedoelde moeilijkheid zou er niet geweest zijn, indien anderen reeds eerder getracht hadden dit terrein te betreden. Dan was al ergens een vast punt geweest, waarvan uit in de een of andere richting verder gewerkt had kunnen worden. Zoals ook uit de achter in dit boek opgenomen literatuurlijst blijkt is het terrein, dat dit boek beslaat nog niet eerder systematisch bestudeerd. Dit heeft tot gevolg, dat ook voor de lezer het gebied weinig bepaald is, zodat het voor hem enigszins een verrassing moet zijn te merken welke onderwerpen behandeld worden, terwijl hij zich bij het lezen zal afvragen waarom een bepaald onderwerp wél is behandeld en een ander facet nauwelijks genoemd is. Op deze vragen heb ik getracht een antwoord te geven door op pag. V een schematisch inhoudsoverzicht op te nemen. Hieruit valt af te leiden, dat na verkenning van het terrein een verbreding van het gebied plaats vindt, waarbij verschillende aspecten in onderlinge samenhang worden behandeld. Uit dit schema blijkt ook, dat de standhouders in dit boek in het middelpunt staan, hetgeen betekent, dat verschillende problemen bezien zijn van uit het gezichtspunt van de deelnemer aan een expositie ter bevordering van de afzet.
