Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. An unlovely exterior, with rubbed and torn blue paper over boards with some loss thereof, rubbed and scuffed leather-backed, five raised bands to spine, gilt title over burgundy leather label in one compartment. Still, however, remarkably bright, clean, and unmarked interior but for previous owners' penciled markings at front endpapers and previous bookseller's ink-stamp inside rear flap and some brushed bleed-through atop third free endpaper from red-stained top (and other) edges. Text-block waffled, wavy, but again, remarkably clean and bright interior. Fine publisher's vignette at title page (a man and a pack-animal, headin' out), and 12 black-and-white engraved section headers, quite fine. His Wikipedia entry says that Jean-Joseph de Pechmeja (25 January 1741 - 8 May 1785) "was a French man of letters" and who collaborated with Abbe Raynal, author of the Histoire des deux Indes (1770), to write Abolitionist manifestos. This philosophical novel Telephe, being an apparent First Edition, comprises a prose poem in twelve "books." The French literary review, Mercure, praised this "philosophical romance" and noted that a reviewer, Grimm, compared it favorably to works of Telemachus in terms of "intellect, academicians, and academic women." In the novel, a young prince, Telephe, "enlightened by reason," Telephe, son of Hercules, has occasion to mediate a slave revolt among the Agathyrses and proposes Abolition. Queen Iphinoe falls in love with Telephe, abdicates her throne, and stumps for Abolition and equality via Reason and Philosophy. A scarce work in the trade, an important early work of poetry to inspire social change, with a fine interior belied by a rough exterior. [5], 2-264 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Prima edizione
First Edition. Octavo; pp. [6],264pp.; [*]4 A-Q8 R4; woodcut title page vignette, head- and tail-pieces; full contemporary red imitation morocco, double ruled in gilt, flat spine decorated in gilt. Extremities rubbed with boards occasionally exposed, contemporary blue ribbon marker detached but present. A Very Good, attractive copy. Pechmeja's best-sellingprose poem, published anonymously under the patronage of one Madame de Beauvau, presumably the Marquise de Boufflers. The workenjoyed both enthusiastic and scathing reviews from the most celebrated literary figures of the time. Readers admired the work's literary beauty and its touching description of friendship, while others found fault with the moral and economic message (which would be described as socialist in the modern sense). Among the most notable Télephedetractors was the author Jean-François de la Harpe, who wrote "[The author] seems, like Rousseau, to make a crime out of private property, without which no society could exist. He doesn't want children to inherit their fathers' fortunes, as if inheritance wasn't a natural right, and as if the fathers themselves didn't work for the sake of their children" (my translation). Others, including the relatively enthusiastic reviewer the Baron von Grimm, were nonplussed by Pechmeja's dour descri+ption of the fate of man and the injustices of oppression, maintaining that while virtue must always be exercised, little happiness can ultimately be experienced even with the purest intentions (my paraphrase of Michaud and Grimm). Grimm rejects comparisons made to Fénelon's novel Les Aventures de Télemaque(1699), saying that if Marmontel's Les Incas(1747) is the Télemaquefor the age of the encyclopedia, then Télepheis the Télemaquefor economists. Within three weeks of publication, sales had dropped dramatically and while the book was reprinted once in the 1790s and subsequently translated into English and German, Télephenever re-experienced its initial popularity. The success of this novel by the Professeur d'éloquence at the Royal College at la Flèche led to several editions within a few years.
