First Series only (a second appeared the following year) of this collection of humorous essays written to accompany satirical portraits of English types by Joseph Kenny Meadows [1790-1874]. Among the contributors are William Makepeace Thackeray (Captain Rook and Mr. Pigeon, pp. 305-20), Leigh Hunt (The Monthly Nurse, pp. 105-12, and The Omnibus Conductor, pp. 193-200), and Douglas Jerrold (15 pieces). The work was originally published in 26 monthly parts, in two series. Van Duzer records the book as having been published in 1840-41.
