(Full Title Translated: Bible, that is: the entire Holy Scripture of the Old and New Testaments. As it was begun to be translated into our German mother tongue by Mr. Doctor Martin Luther in the year of Christ 1522, completed in 1554, and in recent years already prepared with the summaries of Mr. Johann Saubert, also with the varied and instructive commentary on all chapters by Mr. D. Salomon Glassen, with the three books of the Ecclesiastical Apocrypha that were missing in many editions added at the end of the Old Testament, adorned with beautiful copper engravings and illustrations, as well as various necessary indexes, also supplied and improved with the years of the world added in the margins, and then most diligently purified of the printing errors that had previously crept in. ABOUT THE ELECTOR BIBLE The Elector Bible (German: Kurfürstenbibel) is a folio-sized Martin Luther translation of the Bible into German, containing both the Old and New Testaments, that was authorized by Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha and printed by Wolfgang Endter and his descendants in Nuremberg, Germany from 1641 to 1758. Other names for this Bible are the Weimar Bible (after the city of Weimar) and the Ernestine Bible. CONDITION REPORT VERY GOOD for a nearly 300-year-old folio Bible in contemporary pigskin binding. Exterior and binding: Firm hinges and joints, tight binding. Naturally discolored, darkened, soiled and aged leather boards- rubbed and worn from centuries of use. Lovely ornate blind-stamped pigskin. An old, private library inventory hand-painted number 38 at foot of spine. Most of the original fastening hardware is lacking. Head of spine is chipped with missing leather and headcap. The Bible is beautifully and naturally aged with impressive shelf appeal! Interior: Trimmed pages. Majority of the pages are clean with minimal finger soiling. An occasional smudge or small marginal ink spill. Pages range from bright white to toned to browned/oxidized. The front of the Bible tends to be more toned, the middle mostly white and the end more oxidized/browning. Very little foxing beyond the endpapers, which is quite nice, mostly an occasional spot on a woodcut. Two or three text leaves with some marginal or corner paper loss. Multiple pages with marginal reading tears, mostly 1/2" or less, a few a bit larger. A few leaves with marginal chipping or feathering. Leaf 65-66 with a 10" tear along the gutter margin and slightly into the text, no loss of text. The gutter and adjacent margins between p. 424 and p. 425 with an antique candle wax spill from centuries past (likely from someone reading the Bible late into the night). A few letters of text are affected. Some light signs of handling like creasing and a few bent corners. Grubbiness to the endpapers and blanks with paper defects; water dampening stains on endpapers, mostly rear. No worming. No marginalia, writing or underlining within text; endpapers with written provenance in ink of family records (births, deaths, marriages.) dating from 1818 to 1967 of the Snow family. No bookplates or ex library markings. Quite a few misnumbered pages (as called for in this edition) but catchwords and signatures all collate. All in all, a VERY GOOD and complete Elector Lutheran Bible in German with lovely illustrations, and in its intricately blind stamped contemporary pigskin binding. .
