[280] pp., plus [4] pp. "Other Works by Yoko Ono." In the 1960s, Yoko Ono participated as a key artist in the development of Conceptual and Performance art. Working both independently and collaboratively, Ono produced a number of texts, performances, films and musical compositions that looked to push the boundaries of modern art. In 1964, within the context of her work as a performance artist, Ono produced the artists' book, Grapefruit. Originally published in a limited edition of 500 copies in Tokyo, it contained 150 instruction pieces and poems. Intimately tied to her performance work, these short pieces spotlighted Ono's singular creativity and approach to art. An example of one of Ono's instruction pieces from Grapefruit: LAUNDRY PIECE " In keeping this instruction, you may lose all your underwears. I: Record the time when you noticed that you have a worry. Do not write down what the worry was. II: Throw the record into a washing machine together with your next laundry. III: When the laundry is done, take out the record. Read it aloud, and eat it. " A second edition of Grapefruit was published in 1970 by Peter Owen Ltd. in London. This edition included an introduction by John Lennon, and contained 80 more instruction pieces. The Sphere edition, the third edition overall, was published a year later in 1971; age-tanned pages but otherwise in fine condition internally. The overall condition of the book is VERY GOOD +. The uncommon Sphere edition of Ono's Grapefruit integrates the 'cheeky' subject matter of her 1966 short film Bottoms. Rare and highly sought-after signed by both Ono and Lennon. First published in 1964, Yoko Ono's Grapefruit reads as a set of instructions through which the work of art is completed-either literally or in the imagination of the viewer participant. "Grapefruit is one of the monuments of conceptual art of the early 1960s. [Yoko] has a lyrical, poetic dimension that sets her apart from the other conceptual artists. Her approach to art was only made acceptable when white men like Kosuth and Weiner came in and did virtually the same thing as Yoko, but made them respectable and collectible" (David Bourdon).
