An elaborate front board is present but lose, the spine and back boards are missing. The c1880's marble endpapers are present. A bright clean copy with the fold out Whale plate with some early repairs to tears, inserted loose in the book. Both editions of this works are noted for their inclusion of John Narborough's account of his voyage through the Straits of Magellan into the Pacific and for recording one of the earliest accounts in English of Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage upon which he discovered both Tasmania and New Zealand. The second edition differs from the first in that it adds an introduction and a supplement which includes some descriptions short notes on other period voyages. Condizione: Fine. Second Edition. xxix,(7)191;223,(1) pp. Octavo (200 X 125 mm) Bound in 20th century half blue morocco and blue cloth. Spine ruled in 6 compartments. Gilt title. Blue cloth endpapers to match. Bookplate on front pastedown and rear of endpaper. Folding map used as a frontispiece. Two other folding maps. 19 engraved plates including 7 folding. A few of the plates have old minor repairs on the fold lines. Generally a clean attractive copy in a modern binding. A very interesting copy of this title with a great early provenance. The first bookplate is for the collection of Bassett Jones. The bookplate is based on an illustration out of one of William Edward Parry's books. It shows the Hecla and the Griper locked in the ice. Jones was a very early polar collector and his collection was the bases of an exhibit at the Grolier Club in 1932. His collection was sold to Columbia University in 1944. Over years I have seen maybe 5 volumes with the bookplate in them. It would seem either Jones disposed of a few items over the years or perhaps the university had duplicated. This copy has an interesting letter laid in loosely. The letter gives the book to Jones's friend Dr. Charles Conydon as he had upgraded to a first edition from the second edition. This was done in 1937. Jones also say he was the person that had it rebound! The second bookplate is from noted English polar book collector Richard Campbell.…

Leather. Condizione: Very Good. The very scarce second edition of these first hand accounts of four important seventeenth century voyages, featuring extracts from Captain Tasman's journal as he discovers New Zealand and Tasmania. The very scarce second edition of Sir John Narborough's secretive voyage in the South Seas, coupled with accounts of Captain Abel Tasman's discoveries of Tasmania and New Zealand, Captain John Wood's attempt to discover a north-east passage to China, and Friedrich Martens' observations made in Greenland. This work is of particular interest due to the the presence of the scarce early account of Tasman's famous voyage of 1642, in which he visited Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Tonga, discovering Tasmania and New Zealand. Extracts taken from Tasman's own journal describe this expedition. The remaining journey's are narrated in first person from unidentified journals, with the introduction remarking on 'the advantages of keeping judicious journals in voyages and itineraries' due to the 'improvement of Geography, Hydrography, Astronomy, Natural and Moral History', which these accounts can afford later readers. With nineteen beautifully illustrated plates, four of which are folding. The three folding maps are absent, although the torn remains of two of them are present. With an advertisement leaf present to the rear. With the collation: [2], A8, b8, B-N8, B-P8, [1]. C3 (page 21 of part II) signature has been misprinted as B3.ESTC reference no. T86883A fascinating and very scarce collection of first hand accounts of some of the seventeenth century's most important and pioneering voyages and discoveries. Rebound in full calf, with the original calf boards and back strip laid down, and original endpapers retained. Rubbing and losses to the original boards and back strip. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean, with the odd spot or light handling mark. The occasional instance of worming throughout, most prominent to pages 17-32, where roughly four words per page are affected. With minor remains of two folding maps present at margins. Very Good. Not Stated (illustratore). book.…

The preferred extended second edition of a work that presents one of the earliest English accounts of Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage to Tonga and Fiji. Tasman was also the first European to reach Tasmania and New Zealand. In addition there is a detailed description of Narbrough's passage in the Batchelour through the Straits of Magellan into the South Pacific and on to Chile. He successfully proved that trade with South America could be profitable without Spanish oversight, which influenced Britain's foreign policy for the next half century. This edition is more desirable with the additional chart of the western and southern oceans, not present in the first edition, and added text relating to whaling off Greenland. Second edition; 8vo (20 x 12.5 cm); 3 folding engraved maps, 19 engraved plates, of which 7 folding, some unobtrusive marginal staining, discreet contemporary annotations to margins, lower left corner of title with small tear but not text lost; contemporary panelled sprinkled calf, professionally rebacked to style with endpapers renewed, all edges speckled red, a little wear, a very good copy; [2], xvi, xxi-xxix, [7], 191, [1], 223, [1] pp. Hill, 1476; Howgego I, N3; Sabin 72186.…

First edition. Title-page in black & red. 2 engraved folding maps, folding table, 19 engraved plates (7 folding). 8vo. Contemporary panelled calf, rebacked with red morocco label to spine. Housed in a quarter morocco slipcase and chemise, gilt. xxix, [7], 196, 207, [1]pp. London, Sam Smith & Benj. Watford Printers to the Royal Society, Edited by Sir Tancred Robinson, and dedicated to Samuel Pepys, this compilation of four voyages is known chiefly for its inclusion of John Narborough's account of his voyage through the Straits of Magellan into the Pacific. Robinson's introduction seeks to place his volume in the context of the likes of Hakluyt and Ramusio and includes a brief history of previous explorers such as Magellan, Drake, Quiros, Schouten, Hawkins, Barentz, Sharp et al.   Hill states that this work is of "particular interest because of its description of Narborough's passage in the Batchelour through the Straits of Magellen and into the South Pacific to Chile, which was much read by later navigators. Narbrough sailed in 1669 with a commission to explore the west coast of the Americas and to look for the western opening of the North-west passage. He also tried to trade in Chile but failed in this endeavour and turned back at Valdivia. His charts of the Strait of Magellan were superior to older ones." Narborough's account is 129pp.   The work is of added interest as it includes one of the earliest accounts in English of Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage upon which he discovered both Tasmania and New Zealand. He also made stops at Tonga and Fiji.   There are two further accounts. The first is a search for the north-east passage by John Wood, who sought a passage to Asia in 1676. He sailed on the Speedwell and was accompanied by William Flawes on the Properous. Their passage was prevented by pack ice at 75'59N. They reached the west coast of Nova Zembla where the Speedwell was wrecked. The crew survived the nine-day wait for the Prosperous and were rescued and returned to England. The second is a lengthy account of the voyage by Frederick Martens to Spitzbergen and Greenland undertaken in 1671.   Alden & Landis 694/155; Hill, 1475; Howgego I, N3, W54; Sabin, 72185; Wing N-154. …
