First Edition. 8vo, pp.[2], 134, with 8 hand-coloured lithographic plates; foxed throughout; in publisher's dark blue pictorial cloth, front board blocked in gilt with details in red, blue, white, and green; spine sunned, short splits to front joint.First and only edition, extremely rare, of these cautionary tales for adolescents, featuring inter alia debates among children on the ethics of taxidermy, a brawl in Latin lessons, arrests for embezzlement, and the unjust incarceration of a schoolboy. The nine diverting (if somewhat saccharine) stories, accompanied by charming lithographic plates, encourage a virtuous life and promote kindness and respect for one's elders while condemning materialism and cruelty. In 'Il naturalista', for instance, Bice begs her brother, Costantino, to cease strangling small animals and taxidermizing them in pursuit of science; after he sees his pet rabbits eaten by a cat and is himself mauled by a frightened fox, he vows never to harm another animal and instead devotes himself to the pursuit of geology. 'L'avanzamento di classe', on the other hand, promotes studiousness and forgiveness: Eugenio, the school bully, insults Franceschino and his sister, later slapping the former across the face during a Latin oral examination; Eugenio fails his exams and is only able to progress to the next year thanks to the intervention of Franceschino, who quite literally turns the other cheek and becomes Eugenio's loyal friend. Österreichischer Lloyd, or Lloyd Austriaco, was the largest Austro-Hungarian shipping company, based at Trieste (then under Austrian rule) and providing cargo and passenger services from Trieste and Venice to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East; curiously, the organisation established an Art and Literature Section, with their own printing house, in 1849. No copies recorded on ICCU, OCLC, or Library Hub. Allgemeines Deutsches Bucher-Lexikon VI (1858), p.103. Language: Italian.

ills (illustratore). vols. 12vo. S.P. HISTORY AND STORIES FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS BY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SPANISH PUBLISHERS OF ALL TIMES. 4 series (20 issues each): Cuentos, Vida de hombres célebres, Cuentos, Episodios históricos; original illustrated wrappers; fine condition. Ramón Sopena (1867,1932) was a Spanish editor who founded the publishing house that bears his name in 1894 in Barcelona. He was a multifaceted editor that published essentially dictionaries and encyclopedias, but also, journals. For some time he also edited erotic works, and then opted for popular literature. In the children's genre, he published small works in series such as the ones we offer here: the CHILDREN COLLECTION or the LIBRARY FOR CHILDREN. The printing house had a long life, since it closed only in 2004. The purpose of the CHILDREN'S COLLECTION (Episodios historicos) (Historical episodes), was to make relevant topics of Spain's history available to children. Vida de hombres celebres, (Life of famous men), are brief biographies of characters from Spanish and universal history. Finally the two series of Cuentos (Tales), are small stories, without specifying their authors. WorldCat: no copies of this series in US Libraries.

Six sheets of stamp-cut perforated card, being many individual push out shapes printed in colour on both sides (to form planes, troops and so forth). Each sheet measures 255 x 420 mm., and all are housed within the original printed covers. Excellent condition, with all parts intact. An attractive relic of an Australian aviation amusement for children, printed during the Second World War. As the printed rear cover explains, 'all items are perforated and punched, and taking one sheet at a time, the various illustrations should be pressed out by releasing the holding pieces and cut-out lines. First assemble the airmen, parachutists, mechanics, soldiers, stretcher bearers, bren gun, anti-aircraft gun, and machine guns, using the stands made of heavy board.' The final result is an airfield in cardboard and 'when the set is completely assembled, many interesting hours will be spent in manoeuvring the various planes, lorries, soldiers, airmen, etc. into action positions'. The present example is remarkable for being uncirculated, with all pieces exactly as the game was issued. It is an example of the extent to which the War entered mundane aspects of everyday life. The game is included in Marcie Muir's Australian Children's Books (7023). Copies in any condition are scarce, with only three held in Australian institutional collections.

Condizione: Fine. 'Made in Australia', Ace, [circa 1941]. 254 × 420 mm, [6] card leaves of die-cut colour cut-outs (more accurately push-outs, with both sides of the leaves printed) plus the covers. Full-colour pictorial card front cover and printed rear cover (with a detailed illustrated list of contents and assembly instructions); minor wear to the foot of the spine (a little foxed); essentially a fine copy of a fragile large-format children's book designed to be destroyed. It is certainly rare in our experience. The bomber illustrated on the front cover is a Consolidated B-24 Liberator, emboldening us to suggest the date. Muir 7023 (undated).

A collection of artworks produced by Joan Meredith Legg (1931-2012) and her future husband Adrian C. Winkelhoff (1924-2016) when they were children in the Bronx, about 1937 to 1945. Based on one caption, the two were likely students at P.S. 46. Subjects include indoor and outdoor scenes, many with New York City apartment blocks, with figures standing outside; advertisements and PSAs (for Fitch's Shampoo and Hair Tonic, and for eating one's fruits and veggies); historical topics such as pilgrims and Indigenous people, Thanksgiving scenes, and several drawings themed around China, with one of a man with a queue captioned on the verso "In the olde times in Chinia all Chiniamen wore pig tales and this Chinia man came from Chinia and got killed here". There are animals and circus scenes, houses and boats, gardens, and snowmen. Legg also drew a series of geometric pattern designs, from floral and Christmas-themed to an "Indian" design, likely for a unit in school; and designs for a handkerchief, napkin, and several vases, including a brightly-colored vase with a figure in a sombrero and poncho resting under a cactus. Several drawings are potentially related to current events, such as a drawing of a factory and a series of two ships, one with an American flag and another flying a nonspecific red flag. Overall, the collection covers the children's observations of their neighborhood's apartment blocks and storefronts; their usual activities, including church, play, and domestic scenes; units in school; and experiences of advertising and PSAs. Of interest to researchers studying urban childhood, education, and children's visual culture in late Depression- and World War II-era New York City. Overall very good to excellent. Approximately 120 drawings with one short school essay and one photograph, captioned verso. Drawings generally measuring 9 x 12 inches. Conditions vary; drawings generally fairly delicate with damage to margins.
