Stiff Wrappers. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition. Art and Art History, Most Recent Listing, Most Recent Listing; 4to; New York: Near Fine. 1988. First Edition. A lovely catalogue with color photographs of Kadishman's sculpture and paintings. This book from the collection of the violinist Isaac Stern [1920-2001] -- with his "…chop" mark in Chinese characters at the rear. (In the Oscar-winning documentary of his 1979 trip to China, "From Mao to Mozart" Maestro Stern is seen receiving the gift of his chop with delight: "No more signing!" From now on, "Chop, Chop, Chop!") Isaac Stern (1920 - 2001) was an American violinist born into a Jewish family in Kremenets, Poland, now Ukraine. Stern came with his family to San Francisco when he was 14 months old. In 1928, he enrolled at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied until 1931 before going on to study privately with Louis Persinger. He returned to the San Francisco Conservatory to study for five years with Naoum Blinder. In 1940, Stern began performing with Russian-born pianist Alexander Zakin, collaborating until 1977. Within musical circles, Stern became renowned both for his recordings and for championing certain younger players. Among his discoveries were cellists Yo-Yo Ma and Jian Wang, and violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman. Stern toured the Soviet Union in 1951, the first American violinist to do so. In 1967, Stern announced his refusal to return to the USSR until the Soviet regime allowed artists to enter and leave the country freely. His only visit to Germany was in 1999, for a series of master classes, but he never performed publicly in Germany. In the 1960s, he played a major role in saving New York City's Carnegie Hall from demolition, by organising the Citizens' Committee to Save Carnegie Hall. Following the purchase of Carnegie Hall by New York City, the Carnegie Hall Corporation was formed, and Stern was chosen as its first president, a title he held until his death. Carnegie Hall later named its main auditorium in his honor. In 1979, seven years after Richard Nixon made the first official visit by a US president to the country, the People's Republic of China offered Stern and pianist David Golub an unprecedented invitation to tour the country. While there, he collaborated with the China Central Symphony Society (now China National Symphony) under the direction of conductor Li Delun. Their visit was filmed and resulted in the Oscar-winning documentary, From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China. Stern began performing in the country in 1949 and always maintained a close relationship with the country. In 1973, he performed for wounded Israeli soldiers during the Yom Kippur War. During the 1991 Gulf War and Iraq's Scud missile attacks on Israel, he had been playing in the Jerusalem Theater. During his performance, an air raid siren sounded, causing the audience to panic. Stern then stepped onto the stage and began playing a movement of Bach. The audience then calmed down, donned gas masks, and sat throughout the rest of his performance. Stern was a supporter of several educational projects in Israel, among them the America-Israel Foundation and the Jerusalem Music Center. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. .

Condizione: Good. Crayon on paper. 14 x 11 inches. Signed in the image. Folded once. From the collection of the art historian, Peter Selz. After working with sculptors in his native Israel, Kadishman went to London in 1959, where he came under the influence of Anthony Caro at Saint Martin's School of Art. By the mid-1960s, he had… established an international reputation for suspended sculptures that were gestural and full of dynamic tension. In some of his best-known works from this period, Kadishman attached glass or plastic sheets to wood or metal forms so that the mass seemed to float freely in space. Suspended represents his interest in such perceptual ambiguities. It is also a transitional work; by the late 1970s Kadishman began to focus on nature, particularly on tree and forest themes, and worked on an environmental scale. Eight Positive Trees reveals this ongoing fascination, which harkens back to his youth, when, like many other Israeli children, he planted trees throughout the new country. Kadishman's "negative" forms of stylized trees cut out from sheets of weathering steel were exhibited in the Venice Biennale in 1978. The viewer could see through the empty tree-shaped spaces, as well as walk through them to encounter the landscape. The steel silhouettes of Storm King's Eight Positive Trees are the shapes cut out from the trees exhibited in Venice. In contrast to their negative counterparts, the silhouetted shapes suggest both solid trees and shadows.
