Jetzt erscheint der Konzertmitschnitt erstmals als Deluxe-LP in voller Länge auf Vinyl ? in audiophiler Qualität! Als Gründungsmitglied der Jazz Messengers war der Trompeter im November 1955 dabei, als Schlagzeuger Art Blakey mit der Band im Café Bohemia bahnbrechende Live-Aufnahmen für Blue Note machte. Nur sechs Monate später kehrte Dorham mit seinem eigenen Sextett in den berühmten New Yorker Jazzclub zurück, um dort sein erstes eigenes Live-Album für das Label einzuspielen. Von dem über zweistündigen Auftritt veröffentlichte Blue Note 1956 nur ein Album mit sechs Stücken. Elf weitere Titel erschienen erst 1984 auf zwei separaten LPs in Japan, die kompletten Aufnahmen gab es bislang nur auf einer im Jahr 2002 erschienenen vergriffenen Doppel-CD. Jetzt erfüllt sich für Blue-Note-Fans ein Herzenswunsch: die Aufnahmen kommen erstmals komplett auf Vinyl heraus - im Rahmen der audiophilen Blue Note Tone Poet Serie auf drei 180g-LPs im Deluxe-Tipon-Trifold-Sleeve, abgerundet durch ein großformatiges Booklet mit bisher unveröffentlichten Fotos von Francis Wolff sowie einem ausführlichen Essay und einer Track-by-Track-Analyse von Syd Schwartz. Vintage flyer for several nights of performances held at the historic East Village jazz club. Flyer advertises performances held between February 7 through March 5, 1967, with performers including Jackie McLean, George Benson, Kenny Dorham, Stanley Turrentine, and Sun Ra and His Astro-Infinity Music. Robert Schoenholt and Jerry Schultz opened Slugs' Saloon, named after G.I. Gurdjieff's "terrestrial three-brained beings" from his "All and Everything" trilogy, in Manhattan's East Village in 1964. New York regulations forbade the use of "saloon," and the venue name was soon changed to Slugs' in the Far East, due to its East Village location. By the mid-1960s the bar was hosting regular jazz performances, and soon became closely associated with Sun Ra, whose Arkestra would play regular gigs every Monday (as noted on the flyer on offer) as "Sun Ra and His Astro-Infinity Music." By the late 1960s Slugs' hosted a number of prominent jazz musicians. including Sonny Rollins, Albert Ayler, and Ornette Coleman, among many others. The club shut down in late 1972, several months after regular performer Lee Morgan was shot to death at the bar by his common-law wife Helen Moore. 5.5 x 8.5 inches, framed to 8.5 x 11 inches. Really quite superb and typographically "groovy" poster offering a roster of decidedly superior jazz entertainment throughout August 1967. The East Village In was situated at 101 Avenue A, a slice of old New York's East Village that continued as "a lynchpin of the downtown arts, culture, and music scene" when in 1979 it morphed into the fabulous Pyramid Club (villagepreservation website). The unmistakable Booker Ervin (whose tone on tenor is described by British jazz historian Brian Priestley as "not merely hot but scalding") was leading a quintet, the composition of which may have matched his Newport format of that year: Chick Corea (piano), Reggie Johnson (bass) and Lenny McBrowne (drums). Fellow Texan Kenny Dorham was one of the first bebop trumpeters and "had something of the fleetness of Dizzy Gillespie and the sonority of Miles Davis" (Ian Carr). Tenorist Jimmy Heath, whose "tough post-bop style [was] a match for many better-known players" (Priestley), led a group at this time that often included trumpeter Art Farmer and vibes maestro Milt Jackson. Blue Mitchell (trumpet) and Junior Cook (tenor) inherited Horace Silver's group when the pianist left in 1964 and made some fine recordings for Blue Note.
