In 1925, Amundsen flew, with Hjalmar Riise-Larsen as pilot, towards the North Pole aboard two Daunier-Wal flying boats. They reached 88 degrees north before before being forced to spend 26 days on an ice- floe. One of the planes was abandoned, but Riiser-Larsen was able to take off with the other, returning Amundsen and his companions safely to Spitsbergen. Amundsen narrated his experiences in Amundsen-Ellsworths Polflyvning 1925 (translated that year as My Polar Flight).
