Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Carl Knudsen's Renewed By the Spirit: Sermons on Spiritual Discoveries, published by Fleming H. Revell Company in 1939. Knudsen is identified on the title page as Minister of Central Square Congregational Church, Bridgewater, Massachusetts. An especially interesting heavily annotated church-library c…opy, preserving evidence of the active reading and interpretation of American Protestant theology during the period surrounding the Second World War. The front endpaper bears a faint manuscript presentation/library notation appearing to read "For The Church Library" followed by "Gift from: The Board of Publication" or similar wording. The exact wording is somewhat faint and is therefore described conservatively. Throughout the volume are numerous manuscript annotations, underlinings, brackets, crosses and other reading marks in blue ink and pencil. These are not simply occasional ownership marks: the surviving annotations repeatedly engage with Knudsen's theological arguments and appear to represent serious study of the text. Particularly substantial annotation occurs in the chapters dealing with the Holy Spirit and Christian spiritual power. Among the legible manuscript observations are statements concerning the Spirit of God drawing humanity into conflict with wrongdoing, creating dissatisfaction with existing conditions and producing a longing for better things. Another annotation above the text states, "We are made for the habitation of God's Spirit." Other passages concerning Pentecost, Christian morality, spiritual renewal, conversion, temptation, social Christianity and the relationship between spiritual experience and everyday conduct are underlined, bracketed or commented upon. The marginalia is especially interesting in the context of Knudsen's own preface. He describes the sermons as having been prepared in connection with younger ministers and interdenominational conferences and discusses contemporary divisions among "priests and prophets, institutionalists and individualists, conservatives and liberals," while expressing hope for a renewed Christian spirit. Consequently, the manuscript responses preserved in this copy provide an unusual physical record of how an early reader—or possibly more than one reader—engaged with these theological questions. The annotations have not been attributed to a particular individual, and no claim is made that they are in the author's hand. There is no accompanying or laid-in ephemera. A compelling copy for collectors and researchers interested in American Protestantism, Congregationalism, twentieth-century Christian thought, the Holy Spirit, Pentecostal influence, temperance, sermon literature, church libraries, reader response, marginalia, and the history of reading. Condition Good minus (G-), extensively annotated. Original burgundy cloth binding remains intact and serviceable. Boards show considerable rubbing, spotting, discoloration and surface wear, including pronounced spotting/rubbing to the rear board. Corners and spine extremities show wear. Gilt spine lettering remains visible but is rubbed/faded. Endpapers and portions of the text show age toning, foxing and scattered spotting. The marginalia is an important feature of this particular copy and has been photographed extensively rather than concealed as a condition issue. No dust jacket. No accompanying ephemera. Please examine all photographs carefully; photographs form an important part of the condition description. Provenance / Copy-Specific Interest This copy appears to have been presented to or maintained for a church library, based upon the manuscript notation on the front endpaper. Its subsequent extensive theological marginalia documents active engagement with Knudsen's sermons. The annotations repeatedly respond to passages concerning the Holy Spirit, Pentecost, morality, spiritual renewal and Christian life.

McCabe | From | Frank Langille (?) | with my | Aloha."], endpaper maps intact, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Eric Alfred Knudsen (1872 - 1957) was an American writer, folklorist, lawyer and politician who grew up and lived on Kauai, Hawaii. His father was Valdemar Knudsen, a west Kauai sugar plantation pioneer. He was a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives and served as its Speaker from 1905 to 1907. He is most known for his writings and collections of short stories of and about Hawaiian folklore and culture. Co-author Gurre Evelyn (Ploner) Noble (b. 1902), a woman, wrote several children's and adult books relating to Hawaii. Y. Oda may possibly be yet another variant of the name of the artist known as Frank Y. Oda, Frank Yasutaro Oda, or Yasutaro Oda (1915-2001), who illustrated books on the insects of Hawaii and the flowers of Hawaii at about this time, but this is not certain. This is the true first edition and not the one published in 1945 by a different publisher. I have compared the two editions and the photos in the 1945 edition are significantly less sharp than those in the 1944 edition. "It is of Kauai that this story shall tell, the first of the islands to spring from the sea, the oldest and fairest. We shall go back to a time when few white people had settled there, when strong, bronzed men still lived in grass houses, living simply and happily together. This is the saga of Kauai, and of Kanuka, the tall, blond Norwegian who became a king." {from the Prologue]. Y. Oda (illustratore).
