XVI, 193 S. Joseph Eutych Kopp (* 25. April 1793 in Beromünster; 25. Oktober 1866 in Luzern) war ein Schweizer Historiker, Dichter und Politiker. Sein umfassendes Lebenswerk waren die Urkunden zur Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde und die Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde, die eine neue Sichtweise über die Entstehung der Eidgenossenschaft aufzeigte. Anders als Johannes von Müller und weitere Geschichtsforscher legte Kopp Wert auf die Originalquellen, die er im Detail stets weiter hinterfragte. Er eliminierte die volkstümlichen Elemente der Befreiungstradition wie die Tellsage oder den Rütlischwur, die bislang verfemten Habsburger wertete er positiv, polemische Debatten innerhalb und ausserhalb wissenschaftlicher Kreise waren die Folge. Er war 1843 Mitbegründer des Historischen Vereins der fünf Orte. Er war Mitglied der Akademie der Wissenschaften von Berlin, Wien und München und Ehrendoktor der Universität Basel. 1852 lehnte er einen Ruf nach Wien ab. Eine enge Freundschaft verband ihn mit dem Historiker Johann Friedrich Böhmer. Kontakte hielt er unter anderem auch auf Forschungsreisen an die Archive zu Historikern seiner Zeit. (Wikipedia).

Kopps politische Karriere beschränkte sich auf kurze Phasen: 1828?1831 Luzerner Grossrat, 1831 und 1841 Verfassungsrat, 1841?1845 Mitglied des konservativ-demokratischen Regierungsrats und Präsident des Erziehungsrats. Als überzeugter Gegner der Jesuitenberufung zog er sich 1845 enttäuscht aus der Luzerner Politik zurück. Kopp verfasste verschiedene Dichtungen und Dramen. Beachtung fand er jedoch v.a. als Historiker und Bahnbrecher der kritischen Quellenforschung, der in den ?Urkunden zur Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde? und der ?Geschichte der eidgenössischen Bünde? ein neues Bild der Gründung der Eidgenossenschaft schuf. Im Gegensatz zu Johannes von Müller stützte sich Kopp ganz auf urkundliche Überlieferungen, eliminierte die volkstümlichen Elemente der Befreiungstradition wie Tell oder Rütlischwur und bewertete die bislang verfemten Habsburger positiv. Broschur mit Lagerspuren, durchgehend gering fleckig, insgesamt jedoch gutes Exemplar der seltenen Sammlung von Verträgen (Abschieden) zwischen 1291 und 1420. Mit Ausnahme der Quelle vom 1. August 1291,…die in Latein verfasst ist, sind alle Quellen im vergleichsweise gut lesbaren Deutsch der damaligen Zeit auf Schweizer Gebiet gehalten. Joseph Eutych Kopp (1793-1866), Luzerner Grossrat und Verfassungsrat, führte als Historiker die kritische Quellenforschung ein, wobei er sich lediglich historisch belegbarer Quellen, also der Originalurkunden, bediente. Mit der Eliminierung der volkstümlichen Überlieferungen wie Befreiungstradition, Rütlischwur und Tellsage schuf er sich natürlich auch Feinde. Im Anhang bezieht sich Kopp öfters auf Aegidius Tschudi (Chronicon Helveticum).
