August 1291, die in Latein verfasst ist, sind alle Quellen im vergleichsweise gut lesbaren Deutsch der damaligen Zeit auf Schweizer Gebiet gehalten. Joseph Eutych Kopp (1793-1866), Luzerner Grossrat und Verfassungsrat, führte als Historiker die kritische Quellenforschung ein, wobei er sich lediglich historisch belegbarer Quellen, also der Originalurkunden, bediente.
