Mit diesem im Jahre 1908 fertig gestellten Kompendium untersuchte er die Rolle von Großseglern in einer Zeit des Umbruchs. Dampf- und Ölmaschinen hatten in den Schiffsbetrieb Einzug gehalten und die wirtschaftliche Rolle von Großse…glern immer weiter in den Hintergrund gedrängt.Laas untersucht zunächst die unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen der Segelschiffahrt in Amerika, England, Frankreich und Deutschland und stellt die einzelnen Fortschritte etwa an der Takelange für einen Zeitraum von 50 Jahren dar. Anschließend befasst er sich mit dem Vergleich der verschiedenen Schiffsantriebe, mit Sonderthemen wie maschineller Bedienung der Takelage und dem Einzug der Hilfsmaschine in die Segelschiffahrt und zieht ein auch aus heutiger Sicht noch interessantes Fazit.Ein Leckerbissen für den Liebhaber ist schließlich das umfassende Verzeichnis aller in Deutschland aus Eisen und Stahl gebauter Segelschiffe. 180 pp. Deutsch.
