Important early work on the beetles of Switzerland, with several new species. The plates are lithographed and finely hand-coloured, very… much in the style of Jacob Sturm, with the same attention to minute details. Jonas David Labram (1785-1852) was a Swiss botanist and botanical artist and lithographer at Basel. Labram is better known for the illustrations he made for Johannes Jacob Hegetschweiler's Sammlung von Schweizer Pflanzen und Sammlung von Zierpflanzen. His own major botanical contribution is Giftpflanzen der Schweiz. His entomological work includes other publications on Swiss beetles, and on butterflies. Labram's co-author, the Swiss entomologist Ludwig Imhoff (1801-1868) also published on African ants and other Hymenoptera. This is their second most important joint effort, published seven years after their Insecten der Schweiz. Several wrappers contain an explanatory text regarding the publication of this work, including the notion that 20 parts would form one volume. Indeed, the 20th issue contains a volume title and index. Horn-Schenkling stated a total of 34 parts, each with 4 plates, as in this copy, for a total of 211 (sic) plates, which is a peculiar error for 136 plates ! "Complete" [i.e., all published] copies are extremely rare with perhaps no more than one copy sold in the last few decades. scattered foxing, mainly to the explanatory leaves - the plates much cleaner. SAMMLUNG VON SCHWEIZER PFLANZEN nach der Natur und auf Stein gezeichnet von J. D. Labram. Text von Dr. Joh. Hegetschweiler. 17x10.5cm. Four volumes numbered 3, 4, 5 & 6 on bindings only; with 517 lithographed colour plates accompanied by 515 leaves of German text. First volume (numbered '3' on binding) with the only title-page (not dated) in German and almost-blank following leaf, all four volumes with single blank preliminary & final leaves. Pencilled reference numbers at lower outer corners of plates, corresponding pencilled numbers in margins of related sections of Vols. 1 & 2 (Helvetiens Flora). All six volumes in uniform half green leather, with marbled paper-covered boards and green endpapers. Spines with gilt decorations, and gilt-bordered maroon leather label bearing gilt title 'Flora Helvetica' and volume number; Vols. 1 & 2 with four raised bands, Vols. 3-6 with five. Spines lightly rubbed, slight loss at heads of Vols. 4 & 5. Green of spines of Vols. 3-6 moderately faded, gilt still perfectly clear. Spine label of Vol. 1 chipped at one corner, no loss to title or volume number; labels of Vols. 2 & 5 missing. Hinges lightly rubbed. Boards rubbed along lower edges, and lightly so along upper- & fore-edges; tips of outer corners variably rubbed and/or a little worn and/or a little curled. Edges of text-blocks of all volumes red-speckled; top edges a little dust-marked, minor blemishes at fore-edges of Vols. 1, 3 & 5. Bindings holding firmly and of very decent appearance, contents clean and tight. Overall condition VERY GOOD. Originally intended to be published in two volumes, each consisting of 10 Hefte (fascicules) (each with 8 plates and 8 leaves of descriptive text), however the final part of the second volume was never published. Of the 19 published Hefte, we offer here 16 (1-14, 17, 18), with 128 (of 152) mostly hand-coloured plates. Co-authored by two Swiss naturalists, Jonas David Labram (1785-1852), a botanical and entomological artist, and Ludwig Imhoff (1801-1868) a physician and zoologist. It is very unusual to find this work in its original state, with original parts in their printed wrappers. The 'Heft' numbers are hand written on each of the printed wrappers, which are dated, 1838 (Heft 1-5), 1840 (Heft 6-12), 1845 (Heft 13-14, 17, 18). Bousquet gives dates of publication: Hefte 1-2 (1838), 3-4 (1839), 5-7 (1840), 8-9 (1841), 10 (1842), 11 (1843), 12-13 (1845), 14 (1847), 15 (1848), 16-17 (1849), 18 (1850), 19 (1851). A title page and preface (dated 1838), a title page to Part 1 (fasc. 1-10) (dated 1842) and index to Part 1 (fasc. 1-10) are present.
