Aggiungi al carrellosince broadside, folded once. 4to. since broadside, folded once. 4-panel fold-out. This reprint of the article which was featured in Business Week, August 12, 1961. A fine copy. The article announces the exhibition of Ladislav Sutnar's work at the Pepsi-Cola Building in New York hosted by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Black and white illustrations of the exhibition. Ladislav Sutnar (1897 - 1976) has won acclaim both in Europe and the United States. After leaving Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, he was the Chief designer for Czechoslovakia at the 1939 World's Fair. After one desperate year of looking for a job in New York, in 1941 Ladislav Sutnar met Knud Lönberg-Holm,the Danish-born architect who was director of Research at Sweet's Catalog Service. Holm hired Sutnar as art director. Sweet's Catalog Service was the producer of trade, construction, and hardware catalogs that were distributed to businesses and architects throughout the United States. Sutnar and Holm radically transformed the organization and presentation of technical and commercial information. Although he is uncredited, his contributions to business organization benefited society, which included creating a user-friendly telephone directory by implementing parenthetical area codes. Mildred Constantine wrote about Sutnar in 1961: " There is a force and meaningful consistency in Sutnar's entire body of work, which permits him to express himself with a rich diversity in exhibition design and the broad variations of graphic design. Sutnar has the assured stature of th integrated designer." Sutnar said "If a graphic design is to elicit greater intensity of perception and comprehension of contents, the designer should be aware of the following principles: 1) optical interest, which arouses attention and forces the eye to action; 2) visual simplicity of image and structure allowing quick reading and comprehension of the contents; and 3) visual continuity, which allows the clear understanding of the sequence of elements.". Sutnar, Ladislav (illustratore).…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. A meticulously created facsimile edition of a classic work on design by the progenitor of today's information design.A meticulously created facsimile edition of a classic work on design by the progenitor of today's information design.Long before the internet and its vast stores of information in digital form, information in analog form needed to be organized so that it was legible and accessible. One designer who revolutionized the presentation of printed information was modernist pioneer Ladislav Sutnar (1897-1976). In 1950, Sutnar and architect K. Lonberg-Holm published Catalog Design Progress, a guide to modernizing the design of printed materials through typographic simplicity, compositional ingenuity, and navigational devices that signal the logical flow of information. This meticulously created facsimile of the original book illustrates and enacts Sutnar's ideas, making clear their continuing influence on graphic design. In the book, Sutnar contrasts his design style with the conglomeration of text and pictures that characterized earlier printed material. He identifies and illustrates visual features, including typography, pictures and charts, and covers, and shows how the arrangement and organization of visual units allows information to flow smoothly. For this edition, the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Art and Design at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic, has carefully recreated the original, with redrawn figures, retouched photos, re-typeset texts, five-color printing, and spiral binding. A separate reader's guide by celebrated design historian Steven Heller accompanies the book. Both book and guide are packaged in a slipcase. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: As New. 1st Edition. A 4 signature from 'Visual Design in Action' published by Hastings House in New York, 1961. Here 4 pages with examples for the image design for 'Carrs Self Service Department Store' New Jersey (1956-57). This brochure with several texts, among which: "creating a store personality"? Sutnar, 1956-57 [for Katz/Waisman/Blumenkranz/Stein/Weber, Architects Associated] To make shopping easier and also more exciting, "Carr's" self-service department stores wished to establish a store atmosphere expressing unity of design with utility and beauty.? The original program called for an extensive study of the visual means that would create an effective prototype environment. The design had to support the store's approach to merchandising. It also had to provide a disciplined visual framework which would be interesting and rapidly understandable with relation to the overwhelming variety of goods on sale. To achieve this, several systems of design controls were set up to provide a distinguishing identity for everything from store signs to shirt labels. These included coordinated layouts, alphabets and colors on the variety of information forms required. Further, a group of symbols was introduced to facilitate recognition of the various departments. The findings of this study were applied when the store was built. Examples of bags and boxes are illustrated here, with the store identifying design in primary colors. Other problems involved in the execution of the preliminary study are shown on the following visual unit. …
