This copy is in very good condition with a small crease showing on the bottom front corner and some Scotch tape to the top rear corner of the cover as the only real condition issues to mention fo…r this copy. In examining this softcover book it is not apparent why some small pieces of tape were put onto the rear corner - - perhaps some de-laminatation had begun. Now the small tape reinforcement of the corner is unobtrusive and clean. Beyond that the interior shows a previous owner's inked gift inscription on the half-title but otherwise the text in near fine condition with the wonderful array of Adams' imagery highlighting each page and with no accompanying text material. There are three different introductory descriptions about Adams and his work including one "statement" by Adams himself, made in March 1974. 53 pages.".

This volume also represents a new communication method used by the Royal Institution of Great Britain. For the years 1851-1971, the Proceedings contained accounts of the Friday Evening Discourses and some of the other lectures given at the Institution, and several issues were published per year during that time. Starting in 1972, the Discourses were gathered for each year and published in one volume. This is the third such volume in the new publication approach, and covers the year 1974. (from the front dj flap) PROVENANCE: The Library of The Rowland Institute, set up by Edwin Land after leaving Polaroid. The library was dispersed when the Institute left it's original location. This volume came from Land's own collection of offprints and books which he maintained in multiple copies to hand out to visitors and other interested parties.

VG copy.…[++] "Edwin Herbert Land, (born May 7, 1909, Bridgeport, Conn., U.S.died March 1, 1991, Cambridge, Mass.), American inventor and physicist whose one-step process for developing and printing photographs culminated in a revolution in photography unparalleled since the advent of roll film. While a student at Harvard University, Land became interested in polarized light, i.e., light in which all rays are aligned in the same plane. He took a leave of absence, and, after intensive study and experimentation, succeeded (1932) in aligning submicroscopic crystals of iodoquinine sulfate and embedding them in a sheet of plastic. The resulting polarizer, for which he envisioned numerous uses and which he dubbed Polaroid J sheet, was a tremendous advance. It allowed the use of almost any size of polarizer and significantly reduced the cost. With George Wheelwright III, a Harvard physics instructor, Land founded the Land-Wheelwright Laboratories, Boston, in 1932. He developed and, in 1936, began to use numerous types of Polaroid material in sunglasses and other optical devices. Polaroid was later used in camera filters and other optical equipment."
